Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day but tomorrow, Jan. 18, the Westminster campus will celebrate King's legacy with the MLK Community Remembrance and Celebration Breakfast.
A former Titan football and baseball player is the guest speaker. Judge George "Tookie" James, Westminster Class of 1959, will speak at the breakfast that will take place from 8 to 9 a.m. in the Witherspoon Rooms of the McKelvey Campus Center.
James is a judge in the Court of Common Pleas in Beaver County. He was a two-year co-captain for the Titan football team under head coach Harold Burry and a four-year starting catcher for the Titan baseball team.
He played in the all-black backfield with College Football Hall of Fame quarterback Harold Davis and running backs Bill "Whizzer" White and Willie Davis. The four black players in the backfield playing behind an all-white front seven was virtually unheard in college football in the 1950s.
James was the topic of a Westminster Magazine cover story in the winter 2005 edition. We highly recommend you read the story (click here).
Admission to tomorrow's breakfast is free to the Westminster community (students, faculty, staff and administration) and $5 for attendees not affiliated with the College.
