Late Touchdown Pass Lifts Westminster Football to 14-13 PAC Football Win Over Grove City on Senior Day

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore WR Brett Ziegler (Somerset/Somerset H.S.) caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from sophomore reserve QB Brett Myers (Tallmdage, OH/Tallmadge H.S.) with 16 seconds to play to tie the game 13-13, and the subsequent extra-point conversion by senior K Chris Castillo (Austintown, OH/Austintown Fitch H.S.) lifted the Westminster College football team to a 14-13 win over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City College today at Harold Burry Stadium. The Titans improved to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the PAC while snapping a two-game losing streak with the Senior Day win, while the Wolverines saw their 2005 campaign come to an end at 3-7, 2-4 PAC.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Titans opened the scoring less than two minutes into the second period as Zielger hauled in a 43-yard scoring bomb from junior starting QB J.R. Barley (Beaver Falls/Blackhawk H.S.) for a 7-0 Westminster lead. However, Grove City answered with a touchdown bomb of their own, covering 47 yards from Bradford Clark to Scott Fichter less than two minutes later, to tie the game at 7-7 heading into halftime.

In the second half, Grove City took control when FS Ross Trimmer picked up a Titan fumble and rumbled 42 yards for a score. However, the extra-point conversion kick failed wide left, leaving Grove City ahead 13-7 after three periods.

The final period saw the Wolverines line up for a 42-yard field goal attempt with just over three minutes to play, but a false start penalty forced Grove City to punt and give the Titans one last shot at their own 20 with 3:01 to play. From there, Myers (who replaced Barley after he left the game in the third quarter due to injury) marched the Titans 80 yards on 14 plays, culminating with the game-winning pass to Ziegler on a post pattern. NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore WR Brett Ziegler (Somerset/Somerset H.S.) caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from sophomore reserve QB Brett Myers (Tallmdage, OH/Tallmadge H.S.) with 16 seconds to play to tie the game 13-13, and the subsequent extra-point conversion by senior K Chris Castillo (Austintown, OH/Austintown Fitch H.S.) lifted the Westminster College football team to a 14-13 win over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City College today at Harold Burry Stadium. The Titans improved to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the PAC while snapping a two-game losing streak with the Senior Day win, while the Wolverines saw their 2005 campaign come to an end at 3-7, 2-4 PAC.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Titans opened the scoring less than two minutes into the second period as Zielger hauled in a 43-yard scoring bomb from junior starting QB J.R. Barley (Beaver Falls/Blackhawk H.S.) for a 7-0 Westminster lead. However, Grove City answered with a touchdown bomb of their own, covering 47 yards from Bradford Clark to Scott Fichter less than two minutes later, to tie the game at 7-7 heading into halftime.

In the second half, Grove City took control when FS Ross Trimmer picked up a Titan fumble and rumbled 42 yards for a score. However, the extra-point conversion kick failed wide left, leaving Grove City ahead 13-7 after three periods.

The final period saw the Wolverines line up for a 42-yard field goal attempt with just over three minutes to play, but a false start penalty forced Grove City to punt and give the Titans one last shot at their own 20 with 3:01 to play. From there, Myers (who replaced Barley after he left the game in the third quarter due to injury) marched the Titans 80 yards on 14 plays, culminating with the game-winning pass to Ziegler on a post pattern. Myers was 4-of-7 for 35 yards and also rushed for six yards on the game-winning drive, while senior RB Sean Buggey (Homer City/Homer-Center H.S.) added five carries for 34 yards on the possession.

Westminster outgained Grove City 249-22 in total yardage, including a 147-55 margin in passing yardage, while GCC held a 167-102 team rushing advantage. Buggey led all rushers in the game with 24 carries for 71 yards. Barley was 13-of-24 for 113 yards and an interception, while Myers was 5-of-11 for 35 yards in the contest. Ziegler led all receivers with five catches for 72 yards, whle junior WR Jake Buzard (West Middlesex/West Middlesex H.S.) added five catches for 30 yards in the win.

Matt Weil led a balanced GCC rushing attack with 13 carries for 36 yards, while Fichter caught two passes for 52 yards.

The Titan defense was paced by junior LB Jason Fridley (Wellsburg, WV/Brooke H.S.) with a game-high 13 tackles (10 solo), including 2.5 tackles for losses. Senior DE Matt Hanhold (Boardman, OH/Cardinal Mooney H.S.) posted a fumble recovery for Westminster, while senior DE Adam Hadbavny (Westmoreland City/Norwin H.S.) had a team-best three tackles for losses and a quarterback sack.

Westminster football concludes the 2005 regular season next Saturday, Nov. 12, as the Titans travel to face PAC rival Waynesburg College (3-6, 1-4 PAC) in Waynesburg, pa., beginning at 1:30 p.m.
