Westminster Football Closes 2005 Season at 4-6 After 40-13 PAC Loss at Waynesburg

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore WR Brett Ziegler (Somerset/Somerset H.S.) caught two touchdown passes from sophomore QB Brett Myers (Tallmadge, OH/Tallmadge H.S.) for Westminster, but Waynesburg amassed nearly 300 yards rushing as the Yellow Jackets (4-6, 2-4 PAC) posted a 40-13 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) football win over the Titans (4-6, 2-4 PAC) today in Waynesburg, Pa.

Waynesburg jumped out to a 13-0 lead after one period, as Dominick Hunter caught a 21-yard TD pass from Tres Cobb (followed by a missed conversion kick) and Eric Daniels posted a 15-yard scoring run. The Titans cut the lead to 13-7 early in the second quarter, as Myers (making the first start of his collegiate career for Westminster) found Ziegler in the end zone from 22 yards out. The touchdown was set up by a fake punt by the Titans on 4th-and-2 at the Waynesburg 49, which resulted in senior RB Sean Buggey (Homer City/Homer-Center H.S.) posting a 22-yard run. The Jackets built the lead to 16-7 before halftime on a 23-yard field goal by Ben Popson.

In the second half, Waynesburg appearaed to take command when Daniels posted a 60-yard touchdown dash to put the Yellow Jackets on top 23-7. However, the Titans answered with a four-play, 65-yard drive in just 1:09, culminating in a second Myers-to-Ziegler TD pass, this time covering 26 yards. The key play on the drive was a 39-yard screen pass from Myers to freshman FB Josh Weese (Lisbon, OH/Southern Local H.S.). The Titans attempted a two-point conversion which would have cut the lead to eight points, but a pass attempt failed, leaving the score 23-13 after three periods. Myers led the Titan offense by completing 18-of-34 passes for a career-high 198 yards and two touchdowns, with Ziegler catching five passes for 70 yards including the two scores. The team's top receiver was junior WR Jake Buzard (West Middlesex/West Middlesex H.S.), who posted a career-high eight catches for 75 yards in the loss. Buggey paced the Titan rushers with 68 yards on 25 carries.

For the Jackets, Daniels posted 154 yaards rushing on just 11 carries, while Abels posted 140 yards on 23 rushes. Cobb completed 14-of-28 passes for 235 yards for Waynesburg.
