Westminster Football Evens Record at 3-3, Posts First PAC Win With 34-13 Victory at Bethany

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Senior RB Sean Buggey (Homer City/Homer-Center H.S.) rushed 27 times for a career-high 216 yards (8.0 avg.) and a pair of touchdowns and added a 21-yard halback-option pass for a touchdown to junior quarterback J.R. Barley (Beaver Falls/Blackhawk H.S.), as the Westminster Titan football team posted a 34-13 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win at Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va., today. Westminster improved to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the PAC while snapping a two-game losing streak, while the Bison suffered their sixth consecutive defeat to fall to 1-6 overall, 0-5 PAC.

Bethany opened the scoring on its first possession, as the Bison marched 72 yards on eight plays culminated by a 27-yard touchdown run by Brett Clough for a 7-0 Bison lead. Westminster answered on the ensuing possession, as the Titans posted a six-play, 66-yard drive that resulted in Barley connecting with sophomore WR Brett Ziegler (Somerset/Somerset H.S.) for an 18-yard scoring pass to knot the game 7-7. The Titans then took a 14-7 lead in the final minute of the quarter on a two-yard TD dash by Buggey, which capped an eight-play, 65-yard Westminster drive.

A pair of field goals by Titan senior K Chris Castillo (Austintown, OH/Austintown Fitch H.S.), including a record-setting boot midway through the period, put Westminster ahead 20-7 at the half. With 6:23 to play in the half, Castillo set a new Westminster school record by booting a 47-yard field goal, eclipsing the old mark of 43 yards originally set by Josh Simpson at Thiel (10/19/2002) and tied by Castillo at Allegheny earlier this season (Sept. 10). The senior then booted a 40-yarder with 3:26 left in the period to build the lead to 20-7.

Westminster used a bit of trickery to post the only points of the third quarter. Buggey posted his second halfback option pass for a touchdown in as many weeks, as he took a pitch right then threw to Barley down the left sideline for a 21-yard scoring pass, putting the Titans up 27-7 after three periods.

Buggey gave the Titans 34 consecutive points with 9:08 to play in the game, as he broke off a career-long 52-yard scoring jaunt, building the Westminster advantage to 34-7. Bethany then managed a seven-yard scoring pass from Brent Owens to T.J. Parker with four minutes to play fof the final margin of victory.

Westminster posted a 391-296 advantage in total yardage over Bethany, including a 244-119 margin in team rushing yardage. In addition to his 219 rushing yards, Buggey also hauled in a 32-yard reception. Westminster used a bit of trickery to post the only points of the third quarter. Buggey posted his second halfback option pass for a touchdown in as many weeks, as he took a pitch right then threw to Barley down the left sideline for a 21-yard scoring pass, putting the Titans up 27-7 after three periods.

Buggey gave the Titans 34 consecutive points with 9:08 to play in the game, as he broke off a career-long 52-yard scoring jaunt, building the Westminster advantage to 34-7. Bethany then managed a seven-yard scoring pass from Brent Owens to T.J. Parker with four minutes to play fof the final margin of victory.

Westminster posted a 391-296 advantage in total yardage over Bethany, including a 244-119 margin in team rushing yardage. In addition to his 219 rushing yards, Buggey also hauled in a 32-yard reception. Barley completed 11-of-15 passes for 126 yards, on interception and one TD, while also rushing nine times for 18 yards. Junior WR Jake Buzard (West Middlesex/West Middlesex H.S.) led the Titan receiving corps with four catches for 33 yards, followed by Ziegler with three balls for 30 yards.

The Titan defense was paced by junior LB Jason Fridley (Wellsburg, WV/Brooke H.S.) with a team-high nine tackles. Senior DB Reggie Williams (Suitland, MD/Central H.S.) posted four tackles, a pair of interceptions and a quarterback sack. Freshman DE Andrew Robison (Pulaski/Wilmington Area H.S.) added a pair of QB sacks and a team-high 3.5 tackles for losses.

Westminster football opens a three-game homestand at Harold Burry Stadium next Saturday (Oct. 22), facing undefeated and nationally-ranked Thiel College (6-0, 4-0 PAC) beginning at 1:30 p.m.

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Senior RB Sean Buggey (Homer City/Homer-Center H.S.) rushed 27 times for a career-high 216 yards (8.0 avg.) and a pair of touchdowns and added a 21-yard halback-option pass for a touchdown to junior quarterback J.R. Barley (Beaver Falls/Blackhawk H.S.), as the Westminster Titan football team posted a 34-13 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win at Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va., today. Westminster improved to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the PAC while snapping a two-game losing streak, while the Bison suffered their sixth consecutive defeat to fall to 1-6 overall, 0-5 PAC.

Bethany opened the scoring on its first possession, as the Bison marched 72 yards on eight plays culminated by a 27-yard touchdown run by Brett Clough for a 7-0 Bison lead. Westminster answered on the ensuing possession, as the Titans posted a six-play, 66-yard drive that resulted in Barley connecting with sophomore WR Brett Ziegler (Somerset/Somerset H.S.) for an 18-yard scoring pass to knot the game 7-7.
