Titans off to 2-0 start at Saint Vincent's Bearcat Invitational

LATROBE, Pa.--The Westminster women's volleyball team earned a pair of wins Friday at Saint Vincent's Bearcat Invitational, taking down RIT in five sets before rolling to a three-set win over Carlow.

Westminster defeated RIT by set scores of 25-18, 22-25, 29-27, 25-23 and 17-15 before beating Carlow 25-6, 25-14 and 25-8.

After RIT built a 4-2 lead, the Titans put together five straight points, with senior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) recording two kills, senior Zoie Reid (Salem, Ohio, Salem) serving two aces and junior Dakota Hershberger (Belleville, Pa., Mifflin County) adding a kill for a 7-4 advantage. RIT later erased an 11-6 deficit in a five-point run to tie the set at 11-11. Up 13-12, the Titans won the next six points, starting with an RIT service error before Brooke Gecina's (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) serving run included a kill by junior Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart), a block by freshman Violet Seaman (Hartville, Ohio, Lake) and O'Brien, and a Gecina ace to make it 19-12. RIT trimmed a 22-14 deficit to 22-18 before Hershberger delivered back-to-back kills and combined with Seaman on the block that ended the set at 25-18.

The Titans led 6-5 early in the second set before putting together seven straight points to move ahead 13-5, with Trent starting the run with a kill, senior Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) serving two aces and Trent and O'Brien adding kills. RIT cut the margin to 13-10, and after the Titans pushed back to 20-16 on a Trent kill, RIT scored the next six points to take a 22-20 lead. O'Brien stopped that stretch with a kill, and freshman Stephanie Strenk (Avoca, Mich., Yale)later brought the Titans within 23-22. RIT reached set point on a block by Anna Wasula and finished the set 25-22 on a block by Isabel Leon.

In the third set, the Titans moved in front 8-5 after sophomore Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) and Trent put down kills and sophomore Halle Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) served an ace, but RIT cut the gap to 11-10 with back-to-back Titans attack errors. Westminster answered with five straight points, including kills by Anthony, O'Brien, Trent and O'Brien again around a RIT error, to build a 16-10 lead before RIT worked back to 17-16 behind two Anna Wasula kills and a Titans bad set. The Titans stayed ahead and led 24-22 on O'Brien's kill from Davis, but a service error, an attack error and Wasula's block helped RIT move in front 25-24. Hershberger, Trent and Anthony each answered RIT set points with kills to extend the set to 27-27, before Zoey Brasier's block and Fallon Mitchell's kill gave RIT the set, 29-27.

After RIT moved in front 2-1, the Titans scored five straight points, including an O'Brien block and kills by Trent and Anthony, to go ahead 6-2. RIT worked back to a 9-8 lead, but Anthony's kill and consecutive Albers aces put the Titans back ahead 11-9. After RIT tied it at 12-12 and later closed within 17-16, Davis' kill gave the Titans the serve, and sophomore Ava Commons (Canfield, Ohio, Boardman) served four straight points, including her ace and kills by Anthony and Strenk, for a 22-16 lead. RIT answered with four consecutive points to get within 22-20 and later closed to 24-23, but Gecina's kill from Commons finished the Titans' 25-23 set win.

The Titans built an early 5-2 lead in the fifth set, with Kylie Anthony and O'Brien putting down consecutive kills after RIT attack errors had accounted for the first two points. RIT moved in front 8-6 behind a Layla Parker block, a Stella Appen kill and a Titans' attack error, but Hershberger's kill and an RIT bad set brought the Titans even at 8-8. After RIT led 10-8 and 12-10, the Titans pulled even at 12-12 and went ahead 13-12 on back-to-back RIT attack errors, then O'Brien kills gave the Titans leads of 14-13, 15-14 and 16-15. With the Titans ahead 16-15, an RIT attack error on Commons' serve converted set point and finished the fifth 17-15.

Trent led the Titans with career-high 18 kills and added 16 digs. O'Brien finished with 15 kills, 17 assists, eight digs and two total blocks. Gecina collected 36 digs and added one service ace. Davis recorded 22 assists, four service aces and 11 digs.

Westminster 3, Carlow 0
The Titans controlled the first set by turning a 7-3 lead into a 14-3 advantage, with O'Brien serving through six straight points that included consecutive aces. After Carlow got to 14-4, Albers served the Titans through another stretch to 22-4, adding two aces while Reid and Hershberger put down kills. Seaman closed the set with a kill from O'Brien as the Titans won 25-6.

The Titans closed the second set by winning seven of the final eight rallies after Carlow was within 18-13, finishing off a 25-14 set with kills from freshman Jenna Renner (Port Allegheny, Pa., Port Allegheny), Anthony and Seaman and service aces by Reid and Albers in that stretch. Earlier, O'Brien helped the Titans build a 9-4 lead with two kills, a service ace and an assist to Renner.

The Titans separated in the third set with an 8-0 run from 7-4 to 15-4, including seven straight service points from O'Brien with four aces. Westminster later won seven of eight rallies from 17-6 to 24-7, with Anthony adding two kills and Commons recording a kill and a service ace in that stretch. The Titans closed the set on a Carlow service error for a 25-8 finish.

O'Brien led the Titans with eight kills, 13 assists, seven service aces and 15 points while hitting .429. Albers posted 13 digs and added four service aces. Anthony recorded five kills on 11 attacks and served three aces. Seaman converted all four of her attacks for kills and added one service ace.
