Titans earn home shutout against Mount Aloysius

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster women's soccer team defeated Mount Aloysius 2-0 Friday evening at the UPMC Sports Complex.

Westminster improved to 1-0-1 overall. Today was Mount Aloysius' first game of the season. 

Senior Jocelyn Gratchic (Connellsville, Pa., Connellsville) put the Titans ahead 1-0 at 1:05 off an assist from freshman Quinn Arnold (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon). The Titans kept the pressure on after the goal, including three shots by senior Abbey Whaley (Monongahela, Pa., Ringgold), a saved attempt from freshman Amelia Brose (Houston, Pa., Chartiers-Houston) at 9:23 and corner kicks at 17:04 and 20:48, respectively. Sophomore Hailey McQueen (Sellersville, Pa., Faith Christian Academy) had back-to-back shots saved in the 22nd and 23rd minutes, and Gratchic added her second goal at 41:32 from a sophomore Zoe Puhala (Brockway, Pa., Brockway) assist to send the Titans into halftime ahead 2-0.

The Titans protected a 2-0 scoreline early in the half, with senior Emily Codere (Shelton, Conn., Shelton) saving Abby Bell's shot at 48:35 before the Titans earned a corner kick at 52:49. From 57:49 to 65:59, the Titans generated four shots, including back-to-back Brose attempts. The pressure continued from 69:14 to 79:11 with five more Titans shots and two corner kicks, including saved attempts by Gratchic, sophomore Autum Fichter (North Canton, Ohio, Hoover) and freshman Natalie Evangelista (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler). After a Mount Aloysius corner at 82:18, the Titans added a corner and a McQueen shot in the closing minutes to finish off the 2-0 win.

Gratchic scored two goals, including the game-winner, and finished with six shots and three on goal. Codere played all 90 minutes in goal, made two saves and recorded a shutout. Brose added six shots, putting three on frame. Arnold tallied an assist and put her lone shot on goal.
