Westminster drops opener at Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio--The Westminster football program opened its season with a 34-24 loss at Marietta Thursday night inside Don Drumm Stadium.

Sophomore Quentin Goode (Aliquippa, Pa., Aliquippa) completed 14-of-27 passes for 215 yards and finished with one passing touchdown and added a rushing touchdown. Sophomore Lawrence Grayson (Washington, D.C., Paul Laurence Dunbar) had four catches for 64 yards.

Junior Lamont Austin (Sharon, Pa., Sharon) snagged his eighth career interception in the second quarter. He finished with six tackles (3 solo). Sophomore Rocco DiFlorio (Youngstown, Ohio, Austintown Fitch) piled up a career-high 12 stops (4 solo) and added a tackle for loss. Sophomore Devin Mila (Davie, Fla., University School) added a career-high 11 tackles (6 solo), one tackle for loss and a pass breakup. 

Junior Mitchell Tingley (Stoneboro, Pa., Lakeview) drilled a 32-yard field goal with just under four minutes left in the first quarter to give Westminster to a 3-0 lead. Tingley's field goal, the first of his collegiate career, capped a seven-play, 45-yard drive, which was keyed by a 58-yard pitch and catch from Goode to junior Simeir Wade (Farrell, Pa., Farrell). 

With 15 seconds left in the half, Marietta's Joe Tenta connected with Antwon Johnson on a 10-yard touchdown and grabbed a 6-3 lead before James Cornwell's extra-point miss. 

Behind a pair of third quarter touchdowns, Marietta stretched its lead to 20-3 heading into the fourth quarter. 

Junior Sean O'Shea (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) scored on a three-yard rush to cut the lead to 10, 20-10, four seconds into the final period. Trailing 27-10, Goode delivered a 40-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Micah Brown (Waldorf, Md., Saint Charles) with just over nine minutes to play to pull to back to within 10, 27-17. It was Brown's first career touchdown. 

The Pioneers extended their lead to 17, 34-17, on a Benny Lewis three-yard touchdown rush with just under four minutes left. Goode scored on a 17-yard rush with just over a minute left. It was his first rushing touchdown. 

Marietta rushed for 259 yards in the win. Lewis ran 16 times for 122 yards and a touchdown while Zion Jackson-Wilborn finished with 14 carries for 101 yards and a score. Tenta was 15-of-27 for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Taison Starr paced the Pioneers' defense with 12 tackles (6 solo) and 2.0 tackles for loss. Ethan Crock had five tackles (4 solo) and 3.0 sacks. 

Up next:
Westminster returns home next Saturday, Sept. 12, to host Franklin & Marshall. The Hall of Fame and Family Weekend kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Memorial Field inside Burry Stadium.
