Westminster splits pair of matches Friday

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster split a pair of matches Friday at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

The Westminster Invitational Tournament, a two-day event running concurrently with Grove City's inaugural Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament, will conclude Saturday. 

In the day's first match, Westminster defeated Denison by set scores of 25-18, 16-25, 25-18 and 25-22. The Titans fell in three to Albion in the nightcap by set scores of 17-25, 22-25 and 20-25. Westminster is now 6-6 this season.

The Titans won the final two sets and turned a 19-18 deficit in the fourth into a 23-20 lead before finishing the match.

Westminster did much of its statistical work at the service line, finishing with 12 service aces and four service errors while Denison had a pair of aces and six errors. 

The Titans built control of the first set with a 13-4 lead, getting two service aces from junior Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) along with kills from junior Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart), seniors Zoie Reid (Salem, Ohio, Salem) and Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) and freshman Suzie Bishop (Ellwood City, Pa., Riverside). Denison got to 21-17 late, but the Titans answered with kills by Reid and freshman Violet Seaman (Hartville, Ohio, Lake). Seaman then served consecutive aces to close out a 25-18 set win.

After two early pushes by the Titans, Denison separated and took the second set 25-16. The Titans turned a 2-0 deficit into a 5-3 lead, then answered an 11-6 deficit with a block by Seaman and junior Dakota Hershberger (Belleville, Pa., Mifflin County) and back-to-back service aces by senior Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) to get within two, 11-9. Denison moved from a 16-13 edge to 20-13 and kept the Titans from closing the gap down the stretch.

The Titans answered an early 2-0 deficit in the third by winning seven of the next eight rallies, moving in front 7-3 with kills from sophomore Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) and O'Brien during the stretch. The home side kept Denison from pulling even, later reaching 20-14 on an O'Brien service ace. The Titans closed out the third set 25-18.

In the fourth set, the Titans answered after Denison moved in front 19-17, getting kills from Hershberger and Anthony during a stretch that put the Titans ahead 23-20. After Denison pulled within one, 23-22, Anthony put the Titans at set point with a kill from Davis, and Reid finished the set with another Davis-assisted kill for a 25-22 win.

Anthony led the Titans with 13 kills while hitting .306, adding nine digs and an ace. Gecina collected 20 digs and added three service aces. It was her sixth match of the year with 20 or more digs. Albers finished with a season-high 19 digs, while Reid recorded 10 kills. Davis registered a team-high 23 assists to go along with three aces and seven digs. O'Brien finished with nine kills, 21 assists, 12 digs and two aces.

Albion, receiving votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Poll, improved to 9-0 this season with the win in the day's final match. 

The Titans were unable to recover after Albion turned a 3-3 tie into a 10-3 lead in the first set. The home side later put together three straight points on senior Maggie Shadle's (Marion Center, Pa., Marion Center) serve, including a Reid kill, to bring the set to 16-11. Albion finished the set 25-17.

The Titans cut into Albion's 17-12 lead with four straight points, getting kills from Hershberger and Gecina before two Albion attack errors brought the set to 17-16. The teams traded points down the stretch, with Reid's kill pulling the Titans within 24-22. Albion took the second set 25-22.

The Titans erased most of a 12-5 deficit in the third, with Anthony serving five straight points and Reid recording two kills during a 6-0 run that cut Albion's lead to 12-11. The Titans later tied the set at 14-14 and again at 18-18 on an O'Brien kill, but Albion scored the next four points and finished off a 25-20 set.

Reid led the Titans with 11 kills while hitting .375 and added a block assist. It was her fourth match of the year with 10 or more kills. Gecina recorded 21 digs and added a service ace. Davis finished with a team-high 14 assists and six digs. O'Brien added seven kills, 11 assists, six digs and a block assist.
