Westminster goes 1-1 Saturday

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster women's volleyball team split on Saturday at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Penn College before falling in four sets to Marietta. 

Saturday wrapped up the Westminster Invitational Tournament, a two-day event running concurrently with Grove City's inaugural Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament. 

Westminster is 7-7 this season. 

Westminster 3, Penn College 0
Westminster won its opening match with set scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-10. The Titans finished with 36 kills and a .272 hitting percentage while recording 10 service aces. 

Westminster broke open the first set with a 6-0 run from 15-12 to 21-12, with junior Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) serving five straight points and recording consecutive aces during the stretch. The Titans carried that cushion through the finish, getting late kills from juniors Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart), senior Zoie Reid (Salem, Ohio, Salem) and freshman Jenna Renner (Port Allegheny, Pa., Port Allegheny) before sophomore Halle Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) served an ace to close the set, 25-16.

After an early 4-2 deficit, Westminster answered with seven straight points, six of them on Gecina's serve, and moved in front 9-4 in the second set. Later kills from senior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood), O'Brien and freshman Suzie Bishop (Ellwood City, Pa., Riverside) helped the Titans reach set point, and they closed the set 25-13 on a Penn College bad set.

In the third set, Westminster controlled the frame by winning seven of eight rallies from 17-7 to 24-8. Junior Ava Commons (Canfield, Ohio, Boardman) served four straight points in that stretch, with Trent and O'Brien adding kills to push the score to 22-7. O'Brien finished the set with the final kill as the Titans took it 25-10.

O'Brien finished with 10 kills, 11.5 points and a .471 hitting percentage while adding six digs and three assists. Trent finished with eight kills, eight digs and one service ace. Commons recorded a team-high 13 assists and added three digs. Gecina totaled three service aces, five digs and two kills.

Marietta 3, Westminster 1
Westminster suffered a four-set loss to Marietta in the nightcap, dropping the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-12, before bouncing back with a 25-21 third set win. The Titans lost the fourth set, 25-21. 

The Titans erased a 20-17 deficit in the first set and moved in front 22-21, with Trent and O'Brien putting down kills during the response. After Reid's kill tied the set at 23-23, Marietta took the final two points to win the set 25-23.

Westminster opened the second set with an ace from senior Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) and a Bishop kill to lead 3-1, but Marietta answered with nine straight points to move ahead 10-3. O'Brien, Anthony and Trent each added kills later in the set, but the Titans could not close the gap as Marietta took the set 25-12.

The Titans turned an 8-8 set into a 15-8 lead with seven straight points, the last six coming with senior Maggie Shadle (Marion Center, Pa., Marion Center) serving and blocks involving Bishop and Reid. Commons later added back-to-back aces to push the advantage to 18-10, and the Titans held off Marietta's late push to take the set, 25-21.

The Titans went ahead 20-19 on Reid's kill from Commons, but Marietta scored six of the final seven points to take the fourth set 25-21. Earlier, Commons served the Titans to the first four points on Marietta attack errors, and O'Brien, Anthony and Reid each finished with three kills in the set.

O'Brien finished with nine kills, a season-high 19 digs and 14 assists. Gecina collected 24 digs and added two service aces. Bishop recorded four kills while hitting .300 and added two total blocks.

Up next:
Westminster will host Penn State Shenango on Tuesday. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
