Westminster opens season with 1-0 loss at John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio--The Westminster men's soccer team lost to John Carroll 1-0 Tuesday evening at Don Shula Stadium.

Tuesday was the season-opening match for both teams.

John Carroll took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Noah Schmidt scored off an assist from Louis Roseberry. John Carroll generated sustained pressure from 11:01 through 21:57, including two corner kicks and multiple shots, with freshman goalkeeper Vasilis Kouvelas (Anthem, Ariz., Boulder Creek) making a pair of saves. The Titans had a late look when freshman midfielder Tomas Grajales-Franco (Bonita Springs, Fla., Mason Classical Academy) took a shot in the 39th minute and the team earned a corner in the 40th minute, but John Carroll carried its 1-0 lead into the break.

John Carroll created the first sustained push after the half, but Kouvelas saved two shots, and the Titans also withstood a blocked shot, two corners and a shot over the bar. Westminster earned a corner in the 73rd minute before John Carroll answered with a shot wide and a Kouvelas save in the 78th minute. Freshman midfielder Diego Porras (New Castle, Pa., Neshannock) hit the right post in the 83rd minute before Porras struck the right post again at 89:20 mark, but the Titans could not find an equalizer.

John Carroll finished with an 18-3 edge in shots and had a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal.

Kouvelas recorded eight saves over 90 minutes, making four in each half. Porras led the Titans with a pair of shots.

Westminster will travel to Alfred, N.Y., to face Alfred State on Friday. The opening kickoff from Pioneer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
