McNeil to step down as head track and field, cross country coach

6/30/2026 5:30:00 PM

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--After 19 seasons leading Westminster's men's and women's track and field program and cross country programs, head coach Tim McNeil recently announced his resignation to pursue professional opportunities outside of intercollegiate athletics.

"We appreciate the time and energy Coach McNeil has poured into our cross country and track and field programs for nearly two decades," Westminster Director of Athletics Jason Lener said. "He has been an integral part of our athletics department, and we are grateful for the dedication, leadership and professionalism he has demonstrated throughout his tenure. Coach McNeil has positively impacted countless student-athletes and colleagues during his time at Westminster. While his presence will certainly be missed, we fully support his decision to pursue another opportunity and wish him continued success in his next chapter."

McNeil, the College's first full-time employee exclusively dedicated to leading the Titan track and field and cross country programs, guided Westminster to a combined 16 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) championships during his 19-year tenure. He was voted PAC Coach of the Year 15 times and was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Region Women's Coach of the Year in 2024 after leading the Titans to their fourth team title at the PAC Indoor Championships. The title marked Westminster's first women's indoor championship since winning back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020.

Twelve of McNeil's student-athletes earned PAC Overall Most Outstanding Performer honors at the conference championships, 12 were named the PAC's Most Outstanding Performer in the Field while eight were named the PAC's Most Outstanding Performer on the Track. Six Westminster student-athletes were selected as PAC Newcomers of the Year.

"My time at Westminster is cherished. I was blessed to not work a day these past 19 years; everyday was like being at home with my family. I feel like we have built a strong foundation that will last. It is now time for me to set off on another journey. I will always be rooting for these programs," said McNeil.

Hired in July of 2007, McNeil immediately put his stamp on the programs, leading the women's track and field team to PAC Outdoor Championships in each of his first three seasons (2008, 2009 and 2010), including the program's first conference title. The men's team captured its first PAC championship in 2011 before adding titles in 2012 and 2013.

Additionally, the women's cross country team finished runner-up at the PAC Championships and placed 17th at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional in 2009, both of which remain the highest finishes in program history. The women's cross country team recorded four top-three finishes at the PAC Championships under McNeil, while the men's team posted three consecutive third-place finishes from 2007-09.

Westminster flourished on the national stage under McNeil, producing 77 NCAA Division III Championships qualifiers, 36 First Team All-Americans and 21 Second Team All-Americans.

A pair of Titan women's pole vaulters, Marissa (Kalsey) Thomas '16 and Emma Rudolph '24, claimed Division III titles. Kalsey, an eight-time All-American, captured the outdoor title at the 2017 championships after clearing 4.22 meters (13-10), which remains a Division III Championships meet record. Rudolph, a six-time All-American, won the outdoor title at the 2022 championships after clearing 3.95 meters (12-11.50).

A native of Mineral Ridge, Ohio, McNeil earned a bachelor's degree in English from Westminster in 1996 and completed a master's degree in education at his alma mater in 2004. A standout in both track and field and football, McNeil was inducted into the Titan Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2005.

A national search for the next head coach is currently underway.
