Westminster earns spot in PAC championship series

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster softball team secured a spot in the championship series of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament with a 6-3 victory over Geneva Saturday afternoon. 

Westminster, the six-team tournament's top seed, ran its record to 29-9 with the win. Geneva, the No. 2 seed, fell to 33-9 with the loss. Geneva will take on No. 3 Bethany, a 2-1 winner over No. 4 Hiram in an elimination game Saturday evening, on Monday at 11 a.m. The winner will face Westminster at 1 p.m. 

Sophomore Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) upped her season record to 17-3 in the circle, allowing three runs (3 earned) on seven hits in the complete-game victory. It was her sixth-straight start without allowing a walk. 

Freshman Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. Junior Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Coraopolis, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) had a sacrifice fly in the first and an RBI single in the fifth. Her .505 average leads the league. Junior Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) had a run-scoring base hit in the fifth inning. 

Up next:
On Monday, Westminster will take on the Bethany-Geneva at 1 p.m. A win secures the program's third-straight conference title. The if-necessary game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
