Westminster locks up third-straight PAC title with shutout of Geneva

Piper named tournament's Most Outstanding Player for second-straight year

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster scored a 4-0 victory over Geneva in the title game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Championship Tournament Monday afternoon, earning the program's third-straight conference championship.

Westminster, the championship tournament's top seed, improved to 30-9 with the win. It's the fourth 30-win season in program history. Westminster is the league's first to capture three-straight titles since Bethany won six straight from 1999-2005.

This was the 40th anniversary of declaring a softball champion in the PAC.

Sophomore Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) ran her season record to 18-3 with the shutout, her seventh this season. She allowed four hits and struck out 11 on 103 total pitches. Piper's 180 strikeouts rank No. 2 among the program's single-season leaders.

Sophomore Sam Levac (Oakville, Ontario, Canada, Garth Webb) got the Titans on the board with a one-out RBI base hit in the second, scoring sophomore Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin), who led off the half inning with a single. Jordan's sacrifice fly in the third scored sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Coraopolis, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) after her one-out triple. Westminster scored a pair of sixth inning runs: Levac drew a one-out, bases loaded walk before senior Kelly Troup's (Mogadore, Ohio, Field) run-scoring single plated sophomore Sofia Ortiz (Erie, Pa., Fairview), who reached on a walk.

Junior Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) went 3-for-3. It was her 13th multi-hit game of the year. Junior Leah Taliani (Arnold, Pa., Valley) had a one-out bunt base hit in the sixth and drew a pair of walks.

Following Monday's win, Piper was honored as the championship tournament's Most Outstanding Player for the second-straight year. She was joined on the all-tournament team by freshman Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford), junior Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) and O'Brien.
