Westminster dealt opening-game loss by No. 9 Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss.--The Westminster softball team suffered an 8-2 loss to No. 9 Belhaven in the opening round of the Jackson, Miss. Regional Thursday at Jim McLeod Field. 

Belhaven, serving as the regional host, improved to 38-9 with the win. Westminster is now 30-10.

Junior Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) delivered a two-out, two-run base hit in the first to stake the Titans to a 2-0 lead. Belhaven evened the score at 2-2 on Reagan Bryan's two-run home run to left in the bottom of the inning. The Blazers took a 3-2 lead on Maddie Bruner's solo home run to lead off the second before Maryanna Guy's three-run home run stretched the lead to 6-2. Kaleigh Steverson followed with a two-run home run to push Belhaven's lead to 8-2. 

Sophomore Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Karpa was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Freshman Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) drew a first inning walk and scored a run. 

Sophomore Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) fell to 18-4 in the circle. She allowed eight runs (8 earned) on 12 hits with three walks and a strikeout in the complete game, her 18th this season. 

Up next:
Westminster will face Berry (30-14) in an elimination game Friday at 2:30 p.m. (EDT). The Vikings suffered a 1-0 walkoff loss to Emory (26-12) Thursday afternoon.
