Westminster earns win over Hiram to open PAC Championship

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster softball team earned a 5-1 victory over Hiram Thursday afternoon to begin its run in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament. 

The top seed in this year's championship tournament, Westminster upped its season record to 28-9. Hiram, the No. 4 seed, fell to 18-20 and will face No. 6 Saint Vincent in the tournament's first elimination game Friday at 10 a.m.

Sophomore Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) claimed her 16th win of the year with the victory. She allowed one run (earned) on four hits with five strikeouts in the complete-game effort. She retired 13-straight batters to start the game. 

Freshman Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Thursday was her third three-hit game this season. Junior Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) was 2-for-4 with an RBI while sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Coraopolis, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. 

Up next:
Friday, Westminster will take on No. 2 Geneva in Game G at 2 p.m. Geneva advanced with a 3-2 victory over No. 3 Bethany. The Westminster-Geneva winner will move on to the championship series Saturday.
