Westminster posts PAC sweep of Waynesburg

Lock up No. 1 seed in league's championship tournament

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster softball team closed out the regular season with a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep of visiting Waynesburg Saturday afternoon, winning 8-1 in game one before cruising to an 8-0, five-inning victory in game two. 

Westminster honored its four senior players before the first pitch: Emily Watts (Aliquippa, Pa., Hopewell)Jenna Boneysteele (Carnegie, Pa., Chartiers Valley)Kelly Troup (Mogadore, Ohio, Field) and Morgan Murphy (Yardley, Pa., Villa Joseph Marie). 

The Titans wrapped up the regular season with a 27-9 overall record and a 19-3 mark in the PAC, earned the No. 1 seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament. 

Game 1: Westminster 8, Waynesburg 1
Sophomore Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) improved to 15-3 in the circle with the win. She fanned a season-high 16 batters while allowing one run (earned) on three hits in the complete game victory. 

Westminster's offense struck early, plating three runs in the first and five more in the second. Sophomore Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) had a two-run single in the first while sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Coraopolis, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) and Jordan drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks in the second. 

Junior Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base. Sophomore Sofia Ortiz (Erie, Pa., Fairview) was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. She had a two-run base hit in the second. 

Game 2: Westminster 8, Waynesburg 0 (5 inn.) 
Junior Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) claimed her 10th victory of the year (10-5) with the game two shutout. It was her fourth shutout this season. She allowed four hits and walked two while striking out a pair. 

O'Brien went 3-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Her .510 average is No. 2 in the league. It was her 18th multi-hit game of the year. Freshman Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Jones was 2-for-2 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Sam Levac (Oakville, Ontario, Canada, Garth Webb) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. 

Up next:
Westminster will host the six-team PAC Championship Tournament next Thursday-Saturday, April 30 through May 2. The Titans are scheduled to open their tournament run at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
