Westminster splits at Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va.--The Westminster softball team worked a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) split Thursday at Bethany, earning a 3-2, 8-inning victory in game one before falling 11-10 in game two. 

Westminster is now 14-6 overall and 9-1 in PAC play. 

Game 1: Westminster 3, Bethany 2 (8 inn.)
Senior Kelly Troup's (Mogadore, Ohio, Field) two-strike, two-out RBI base hit in the top of eighth proved the be the deciding run in Westminster's first extra-innings game of the season. Senior Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) scored on the Troup base hit after singling to lead off the inning. 

Sophomore Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth with a two-run home run, her fifth of the year. 

Karpa went 2-for-4 with a run. Junior Leah Taliani (Arnold, Pa., Valley) was 2-for-3 with a walk. 

Sophomore Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) improved to 8-2 with the win, allowing two runs (2 earned) on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts. 

Game 2: Bethany 11, Westminster 10
Bethany struck for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, capped by Jenna Nolan's two-out walkoff base hit, to snag the game two win. 

Karpa's first home run of the season—a three-run shot in the top of the first—staked the Titans to a 3-0 lead. Trailing 5-3 after four, the Titans scratched out three runs in the fifth before adding four more in the sixth to go up 10-5. The Bison cut the deficit to two with back-to-back home runs by Brooke Markland and Nolan in the sixth. Markland singled in a pair of runs to the game at 10-10 before Nolan's game-winning base hit. 

Junior Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) extended her current hit streak to 16-straight games with a run-scoring double in the sixth. She finished 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Karpa went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, six RBIs and two runs. 

Piper suffered the loss, falling to 8-3. She allowed six runs (6 earned) on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 relief innings. Junior Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) took a no-decision, allowing five runs (4 earned) on 10 hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. 

Up next: 
Westminster will host PAC rival Grove City Wednesday. The opening pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
