Piper tosses one-hitter to highlight Westminster's sweep of W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa.--Sophomore Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) fired a one-hitter to go along with seven strikeouts in the opener of Westminster's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep of rival Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon. The Titans scored an 8-0, five-inning victory in game one before prevailing in game two, 4-1. 

Westminster, winners of three straight and 13 of its last 16, improved to 18-8 overall and 12-2 in the PAC. 

Game 1: Westminster 8, W&J 0 (5 inn.)
Up 1-0 through two innings, the offense exploded with a seven-run third. Sophomore Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) commenced the scoring with a two-run home run, marking her sixth of the year. Jordan went 2-for-4. 

Westminster had 15 hits in the opener after combining for 16 in Thursday's 11-1, five-inning game two win over Pitt-Bradford. 

Senior Kelly Troup (Mogadore, Ohio, Field) was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Junior Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Sophomore Sofia Ortiz (Erie, Pa., Fairview) went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Coraopolis, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. She dropped down a pair of sacrifice bunts. Freshman Sam Levac (Oakville, Ontario, Canada, Garth Webb) was 2-for-3 with a run scored. 

The shutout was Piper's third this season. She improved to 10-3 with the win. 

Game 2: Westminster 4, W&J 1
Junior Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) moved to 7-4 with the victory in game two. She allowed one run (earned) on three hits with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Piper worked 2.0 scoreless relief innings, striking out three. 

Junior Faith Jones' (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) RBI single in the third evened the score at 1-1. Freshman Kylie Anthony's (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) two-run triple and Jordan's RBI base hit in the fifth pushed Westminster's lead to 4-1. 

Levac went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Jordan went 2-for-4. 

Up next:
Westminster hosts Franciscan Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
