Piper twirls second-straight one-hitter in sweep of Franciscan

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Sophomore Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) powered the Westminster softball team to a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep of visiting Franciscan Wednesday, delivering her second-straight one-hitter while striking out 13 in the 13-0, five-inning game one triumph. Westminster cruised to a 14-3, five-inning win in game two. 

Westminster, winners of five straight, improved to 20-8 overall and 14-2 in the PAC. 

Game 1: Westminster 13, Franciscan 0 (5 inn.)
Piper retired the game's first 14 batters--striking out the first 10--before Elizabeth Maxwell's base hit with two outs in the fifth. It was her fourth start this season without issuing a walk. Piper moved her record in the circle to 11-3 this season. 

Sophomore Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) hit a two-run home run in Westminster's six-run second inning. It was her seventh this season. She went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) had an RBI triple in the first. She went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Kelly Troup (Mogadore, Ohio, Field) went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. 

Game 2: Westminster 14, Franciscan 3 (5 inn.) 
Westminster spotted Franciscan three runs in the top of the first before responding with five runs in the bottom of the frame. The Titans recorded 13 hits, marking their fourth game with 13 or more in the last five.

Junior Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) allowed three runs (3 earned) on six hits with strikeouts in the complete-game win. She improved to 8-4 in the circle this spring. 

Sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Coraopolis, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base. Junior Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base. Anthony went 1-for-2 with a triple, two walks, an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. She has five triples this year.

Westminster is scheduled to host Allegheny on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
