Westminster earns four-set Homecoming victory

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster women's volleyball team earned a 3-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Homecoming victory over Chatham Saturday evening at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

After dropping the opening set 26-24, Westminster rattled off three-straight set wins, 25-16, 25-23 and 25-18. The Titans improved to 11-7 overall and pushed their PAC record to 3-0. Chatham fell to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Senior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) hit .343 for Westminster, finishing with 17 kills on 35 attempts. She added 11 digs for her eighth double-double this season. Junior Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) registered her third-straight triple-double and fourth of the year, totaling 11 kills, 20 assists and 13 digs. She added five service aces. Junior Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) had 23 digs and five service aces while senior Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) finished with 26 assists and six digs. It was her seventh match this year with 20 or more assists.

In the opening set, the Titans reached a 24-22 advantage on consecutive kills by junior Dakota Hershberger (Belleville, Pa., Mifflin County) and Trent, but Chatham scored the final four points to take the set 26-24. Earlier, the Titans had turned a 5-4 deficit into a 9-6 lead, with senior Zoie Reid (Salem, Ohio, Salem) and freshman Violet Seaman (Hartville, Ohio, Lake) contributing kills during that stretch.

After Chatham pulled even at 8-8 in the second set, the Titans scored the next five points to move ahead 13-8. Senior Maggie Shadle (Marion Center, Pa., Marion Center) served through the final four points of that stretch, including two aces, while Trent added kills at 10-8 and 13-8. The Titans kept the margin from there and closed out the set, 25-16.

The Titans turned the third set around after falling behind 14-8, using a five-point push from 16-13 down that included a Gecina service ace, kills by Reid and O'Brien, and a Chatham setting error to move ahead 18-16. Chatham got back within one, 24-23, but the Titans finished the set on O'Brien's kill from Davis for a 25-23 win.

In the fourth set, the Titans erased Chatham's 8-2 start with seven-straight points, taking a 9-8 lead as O'Brien's serving turn included three service aces and kills by sophomore Zoie Reid (Salem, Ohio, Salem) and Reid. The teams traded points briefly before the Titans pushed ahead with a four-point run from 14-11 to 18-11, including back-to-back Trent kills and an O'Brien kill. Gecina served consecutive aces late, and the Titans closed the fourth set 25-18 on Reid's kill from O'Brien.

The Titans recorded a season-high 17 service aces with four service errors, while Chatham finished with one ace and eight service errors.
