Westminster falls in five sets to Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa.--The Westminster women's volleyball team dropped a five-set thriller to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City Wednesday night inside the Grove City College Arena. 

The Titans won the second and fourth sets before Grove City took the fifth, with set scores of 23-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19 and 13-15.

The Titans are 11-8 overall and 3-1 in PAC play. Grove City is 16-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference. 

Senior Zoie Reid (Salem, Ohio, Salem) led the Titans with a career-high 23 kills to go along with a season-high 13 digs. It was her first career double-double. Junior Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) posted her fourth straight triple-double, finishing with 17 kills, a career-high 31 assists, 17 digs and two service aces. She now has 1,013 career assists. Junior Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) had a season-high 40 digs and added two service aces while senior Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) recorded a 26-assist, 15-dig double-double. It was her fourth this season. Senior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) finished with a 10-kill, 13-dig double-double, her ninth this season. She also surpassed 1,000 career digs (1,006). Freshman Violet Seaman (Hartville, Ohio, Lake) added four blocks.

The Titans erased a late 22-18 deficit in the first set with four-straight points, capped by consecutive Reid kills from O'Brien that tied the set at 22-22. Grove City scored the next two points before Reid answered with another kill, but the Wolverines closed the set with a kill to take it 25-23.

The Titans scored the final four points after Grove City tied the second set at 21-21, closing out a 25-21 second set win. Davis assisted on all four closing kills, with freshman Suzie Bishop (Ellwood City, Pa., Riverside) and Reid putting the Titans back in front before O'Brien finished the last two points.

The Titans led 20-18 in the third set after junior Dakota Hershberger's (Belleville, Pa., Mifflin County) kill from O'Brien, but Grove City scored the final seven points to take the set 25-20. Earlier, the Titans scored three straight to go ahead 10-6, including a service ace from senior Maggie Shadle (Marion Center, Pa., Marion Center), and Davis added an ace for a 12-11 lead.

The Titans took control of the fourth set with seven-straight points from a 5-2 lead, including five kills by Reid and six-straight service points from O'Brien. Grove City got as close as 23-19 late, but senior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) answered with a kill before the Titans closed out the set, 25-19.

The Titans answered a 13-11 deficit with consecutive Reid kills, both from O'Brien, to pull even at 13-13 in the deciding fifth set. Grove City took the final two points on a Sarah Hart kill and a Westminster attack error, closing the set 15-13.
