Westminster falls at home to Geneva

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball team fell to visiting Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Geneva 99-90 Wednesday evening at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

Five players finished in double figures for Westminster (6-10, 3-4 PAC). Sophomore Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) finished with 20 points on six rebounds, going 6-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-11from three-point field goal range. Sophomore Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) added 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists while freshman Bella Calcamuggio (Sylvania, Ohio, Notre Dame) had 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Junior Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) and freshman Jenna Zuelch (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) scored 10 points apiece. 

Arionna White led Geneva (6-10, 3-4 PAC) with 24 points, six rebounds and four assists. Destanie McCullough added 18 points, four rebounds and five assists while Emily Garvin posted 15 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. It was her fifth double-double this season. 

Geneva built a 12-0 lead over the first two-and-a-half minutes before a Maryo three-pointer cut the lead to four, 25-21, with 19 seconds to go in the quarter. The Golden Tornadoes went into the second up six, 27-21. Maryo scored nine of her 20 in the opening period. Geneva outscored Westminster 15-4 over the first 4:40 of the second, opening up a 17-point lead, 42-25. Calcamuggio's layup with under 50 seconds remaining in the quarter cut the Golden Tornadoes' lead to 13, 49-36, going into the half. 

Geneva shot 47.5 percent (19-40) from the floor and went 9-of-19 (.474) from three-point range in the first half. 

The Golden Tornadoes' lead swelled to 24, 67-43, with just under four to go in the third before a 13-2 Westminster run trimmed the visitor's lead to 13, 69-56, with 1:20 to go. Geneva led by 18, 76-58, at the end of the quarter. Syka's three-pointer with 4:28 left cut the Geneva lead to eight, 91-83. White split a pair of free throws with under a minute-and-a-half to go to push the Golden Tornadoes' lead to 14, 99-85. Freshman Avery Maier (Butler, Pa., Butler) knocked down a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left that cut the deficit to nine, 99-90. 

Geneva outrebounded Westminster 45-43 and scored 25 points off 19 Titan turnovers. Wednesday was Westminster's five 90-point outing since a 105-77 win over Geneva on Feb. 22, 2022.
