Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Titans edged on road

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio--The Westminster College men's basketball team suffered an 87-79 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) road loss to Franciscan Saturday afternoon inside Finnegan Fieldhouse. 

Saturday's game featured eight ties and 11 lead changes. 

Graduate student DJ Harrell (Cleveland, Ohio, East Technical) led four Westminster (9-6, 4-2 PAC) players in double figures, finishing with 29 points. He has scored 20 or more points in a game seven times this season. Senior Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) had 15 points and six rebounds while senior Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) added 12 points and nine boards. Freshman Nick Ryan (Warren, Ohio, John F. Kennedy) chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds. 

Zach Oliver led Franciscan (12-3, 4-2 PAC) with a 26-point, 12-rebound double-double. He went 10-of-16 from the floor and hit 3-of-6 three-point field goal attempts. Oliver scored 20 of his 26 in the second half. Sawyer Butler added 19 points, five rebounds and four assists. 

Up one, 35-34, with just under two minutes left in the first half, DePietro scored five-straight points, including a three-pointer with 41 seconds to go, to stake Westminster to a six-point lead, 40-34, heading into the half. Weir paced the Titans with 11 first half points. DePietro finished with seven points and seven boards in the first 20 minutes of action. Westminster finished the opening half shooting an impressive 55.2 percent (16-29) from the floor. 

Down two, 59-57, with just under 10 minutes remaining, Franciscan put together a 13-1 scoring run to go up by 10, 70-60, with 6:02 to play. Oliver had nine points during the stretch. Senior Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) knocked down a three-pointer with 25 seconds remaining to cut the Barons' lead to seven, 81-74, and Harrell converted a three-point play to trim the lead to six, 85-79, with eight seconds to go before Butler was true on a pair of free throws to close out the game.

Westminster shot 50 percent (30-60) from the field and went 13-of-16 (.813) from the free throw line. Franciscan shot 48.4 percent (31-64) from the floor and finished 18-of-26 (.692) from the line. Franciscan had a 32-5 advantage in bench points, with the Barons' reserves outscoring their counterparts 17-0 in the second half.

Westminster will host Geneva (7-8, 4-2 PAC) Wednesday. Tipoff from Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Geneva was dealt a 62-43 loss at Waynesburg Saturday.
