Titans wrap up play at Case Western Reserve Quad

CLEVELAND--The Westminster College women's volleyball team suffered a pair of setbacks Saturday at the Case Western Reserve Quad. 

Westminster fell in a competitive, three-set match with Heidelberg Saturday morning after its grueling, five-set loss to Earlham Friday night. Case Western Reserve, which entered the season ranked No. 25, rallied from a first set loss to secure a 3-1 win. 

Westminster is 3-4 this season. The Titans will travel to Wooster next weekend for the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic, opening with a match against Bluffton at 3 p.m. on Friday.


Heidelberg 3, Westminster 0
(25-19, 25-20, 25-22)
Heidelberg (6-2), winners of five-straight matches, scored the three-set win over Westminster before edging Olivet in a five-setter later in the day. Senior Rachel LaSalvia (Columbus, Pa., Corry), junior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) and sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) finished with nine kills each. Senior Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) had 15 assists and five digs while junior Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) chipped in with eight assists and three digs. Trent's nine digs were a match best for the Titans. Junior Meredith Hart (New Waterford, Ohio, Crestview) added seven digs. Sophia Simon and Kaitlyn Uffman had seven kills apiece for Heidelberg. 

Set 1: Heidelberg 25, Westminster 19
Westminster cut Heidelberg's lead to two, 11-9, before the Student Princes fired off six-straight points to go up eight, 17-9. The Titans managed to climb back to within one, 20-19, but Heidelberg secured the win by scoring the final five points of the set. O'Brien had four of her nine kills in the opening set. 

Set 2: Heidelberg 25, Westminster 20
The second set proved to be a back-and-forth affair with eight ties and a pair of lead changes. Westminster, up 19-17, saw Heidlberg score six-straight points on attack errors to go up by four, 23-19 before holding on for the five-point set win. LaSalvia finished the second with four kills while Hart had four of her seven digs in the set. 

Set 3: Heidelberg 25, Westminster 22
The third set once again featured eight ties to go with four lead changes. After a LaSalvia kill brought Westminster to within one, 21-20, senior Jamie Robertson's (Los Angeles, Calif., Palisades Charter) service ace tied the set at 21-all. Senior Shelby Rambo (East Palestine, Ohio, Crestview) delivered a kill to bring Westminster back to with two, 24-22, before Simon secured the match win with a kill of her own. Trent finished the third with four kills.

Case Western Reserve 3, Westminster 1
(21-25, 19-25, 11-25, 19-25)
O'Brien finished with a 10-kill, 12-dig double-double. It was her first this season. O'Brien also added a season-high nine digs. Sophomore Megan Darno (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) finished with a career-high nine kills while Trent and freshman Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) each had seven kills. Rambo finished with six kills on nine swings and had two solo blocks. Nardone matched her season high with 23 assists to go along with nine digs. Sophomore Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) had 15 digs and a pair of service aces. Kalli Wall led Case Western Reserve (2-6) with 17 kills on 32 attempts. Amanda Ngo added 11 kills. 

Set 1: Westminster 25, Case Western Reserve 21
The Titans came out swinging against the Spartans, scoring a 25-21 win in the opening set. Even at 20-all, Westminster scored five of the final six points to secure the set win. Darno paced the offense with five of her nine kills coming in the first. Trent added four kills in the set. 

Set 2: Case Western Reserve 25, Westminster 19
The Spartans, after three early ties, went up by six, 13-7 before Kiya Levy scored back-to-back kills late to give Case Western Reserve a 24-19 lead. Anthony and Darno had three kills each in the second. 

Set 3: Case Western Reserve 25, Westminster 11
Following an attack error that cut Westminster's deficit to three, 8-5, the Spartans strung together nine-straight points to grab a 17-5 advantage. Case Western Reserve scored five of the set's final seven points to secure the win. O'Brien posted four kills in the third. 

Set 4: Case Western Reserve 25, Westminster 20
The Titans raced out to 12-8 lead, fueled by back-to-back kills by senior Charlotte Burgan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) to begin the set and five attack errors by the Spartans. Case Western Reserve rattled off the next seven points to take a 15-12 lead. An O'Brien kill cut Westminster's deficit to one, 20-19, but the Spartans closed out the match by scoring five of the final six points. O'Brien and LaSalvia finished the fourth with three kills apiece.
