Titans fall to Marietta in season opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College fell to Marietta College, 12-8, in the season lidlifter Thursday night at Memorial Field inside Harold Burry Stadium.

The Thursday game was Westminster's first since 2019, a 66-7 season-opening win over Capital inside Burry Stadium.

Senior quarterback Ty McGowan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) finished 9-of-20 passing for 106 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed six times for 50 yards. Trailing 6-0 early in the third quarter, McGowan connected with senior wide receiver Taite Beachy (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) on a 12-yard strike to tie the game at 6-6. The Titans scored on a wild two-point conversion when junior punter Craig Sonson Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa., Montour), Westminster's holder on the extra-point attempt, snagged a bad snap and found senior tight end Nate Wadsworth (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) in the end zone. Sophomore returner Brite Cannon (Parkland, Fla., Monarch) keyed the three-play scoring drive with a 60-yard kickoff return.

Beachy finished with four catches for 44 yards. The touchdown grab was the 11th of his career.

Vante' Hodges paced the Marietta offense with 37 carries for 171 yards and a score. He commenced the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown with just under 12 minutes left in the second quarter, capping a 14-play, 75-yard drive. Benny Lewis ran 12 times for 54 yards. Louis Goodnow caught five passes for 27 yards while Kenyon Franklin made four grabs for 35 yards.

Antwon Johnson was 16-of-26 passing for 123 yards. He also ran five times for 22 yards, capping a 12-play, 73-yard drive six minutes into the fourth with a 3-yard touchdown.

Marietta ran 83 offensive plays and rolled up 365 yards of total offense, including 242 yards on the ground. The Pioneers finished with over 41 minutes of time of possession and went 10-of-20 (.500) on third-down conversions.

Senior linebacker Dylan Sleva (McDonald, Pa., Moon) racked up a career-high 25 tackles (9 solo, 16 assist). The 25 tackles are the most by a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) player since Carnegie Mellon's Drew Fitzmorris had 22 against Geneva on Oct. 14, 2017. Senior linebacker Mason Paljich (New Franklin, Ohio, Manchester) posted a career-high 10 stops (1 solo, 9 assist) and added 1.5 tackles for loss.
