Westminster opens PAC play with 28-23 win at Case Western Reserve

CLEVELAND--Sophomore Brite Cannon (Parkland, Fla., Monarch) accounted for 232 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in Westminster College's 28-23 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Case Western Reserve Saturday night at DiSanto Field.

Westminster improved to 2-1 with the win.

Cannon delivered a pair of explosive second quarter touchdowns. With Westminster leading 14-7, Cannon returned a Case Western Reserve kickoff 100 yards to help stretch the Titans' lead to 21-7. It was the program's first 100-yard kickoff return since Sean Buggey took one back against Washington & Jefferson on Oct. 8, 2005. Westminster raced out to a 27-14 lead after Cannon ripped off a streaking 80-yard catch and run on a pass from sophomore Sean O'Shea (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) with just under three minutes to go in the quarter.

Westminster leaned on a balanced offensive attack, rolling up 322 yards. One hundred sixty-eight yards came through the air and another 154 came on the ground. O'Shea, making his second-straight road start, threw for a touchdown and ran for another. He completed 17-of-24 passes for 168 yards and carried the ball 13 times for 56 yards. O'Shea helped Westminster jump out to an early lead, scoring on a 1-yard plunge with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter. He has three rushing touchdowns this season. The 80-yard strike to Cannon was the first passing touchdown of O'Shea's career.

Cannon finished with six grabs for 126 yards--both were career highs for the sophomore. Junior Brock Covell (Titusville, Pa., Titusville) hauled in three catches for 20 yards.

Junior Clayton Cannon (Parkland, Fla., Marjory Stoneman Douglas) had a career-high 18 carries for 67 yards. His 3-yard touchdown run three minutes into the second quarter helped extend Westminster's lead to 14-0. Senior Demere White (Manalapan, N.J., DePaul Catholic) rushed five times for 32 yards.

Senior Dylan Sleva (McDonald, Pa., Moon) registered his fifth-straight game with a dozen or more tackles, finishing with 15 stops (10 solo). He added a sack in the opening quarter. Sophomore Wes Donner (Bastrop, Texas, Bastrop) had seven tackles (4 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Sophomore Aiden Fletcher (Tarentum, Pa., Deer Lakes) and senior Mason Paljich (New Franklin, Ohio, Manchester) finished with six tackles each. Paljich added a pair of tackles for loss. Senior Jean Garry Joseph's (North Miami, Fla., Ebenezer Christian) fourth quarter interception of Sam DeTillio was the second of his career.

Westminster's run defense has been a pacesetter over last two weeks, holding Franklin & Marshall (61) and Case Western Reserve (56) to a combined 117 rushing yards.

Sophomore Andrew Caranna (Copley, Ohio, Revere) was true on all four of his extra-point attempts.

Case Western Reserve finished with 442 yards of total offense, keyed by a 386-yard outing from DeTillio. He finished 30-of-49 passing in his second career start. Dylan Cave caught eight passes for 119 yards, including a 40-yard score late in the second. Liam O'Brien had 122 yards on seven catches. Andy Kavcic finished with four catches for 75 yards, which included a 48-yard touchdown with just under a minute-and-a-half left in regulation. Kavcic also rushed nine times for 35 yards. Daniel King led the Spartans' defense, totaling 15 tackles (6 solo), 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

Up next:
Westminster, after enjoying its Sept. 27 bye, will host Bethany for its annual Family Weekend and Hall of Fame game on Saturday, Oct. 4. Kickoff from Memorial Field inside Harold Burry Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
