Westminster goes 1-1 to start season

LATROBE, Pa.-The Westminster College women's volleyball team opened with a 3-0 win over Bethany before suffering a 3-1 loss to Penn State Behrend on the first day of Saint Vincent's Bearcat Invitational Friday.

Westminster won 25-13, 25-17 and 25-16 against Bethany. The Titans fell 12-25, 23-25, 25-21 and 18-25 to the Lions.

Senior outside hitter Rachel LaSalvia (Columbus, Pa., Corry) hit .435 against Bethany, and finished with 11 kills. She added six digs. Senior middle hitter Charlotte Burgan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) hit .300 and totaled 11 kills. Freshman outside hitter Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) hit .429 with eight kills. She added five service aces and five digs. Senior setter Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) finished with 22 assists and five digs. Junior setter Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) totaled 11 assists and four digs. Junior libero Meredith Hart (New Waterford, Ohio, Crestview) posted a career-high 10 digs in the three-set win.

Ashton Thomas led Bethany with eight kills.

Westminster hit a combined .378 against Bethany.

Penn State Behrend 3, Westminster 1
Sophomore outside hitter Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) had a career-high 12 kills against Penn State Behrend and finished with a .292 hitting percentage. She added two assists, two digs and a pair of blocks. Brady finished with nine kills and a pair of digs while senior middle hitter Shelby Rambo (East Palestine, Ohio, Crestview) chipped in with nine kills, two digs and five blocks. Nardone posted 23 assists and three digs while Davis added 15 assists and seven digs.

Cadence Jones led Penn State Behrend with 22 kills, seven digs and six blocks.

Westminster will wrap up its weekend in Latrobe on Saturday against RIT at 12 p.m. and Carlow at 2 p.m.
