Albers outstanding in elimination game win

Westminster to face Grove City Saturday

NORTH FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, Pa.--Sophomore righty Jon Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) fired seven strong innings Friday to help Westminster College secure a 3-2 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Baseball Championship Tournament elimination game victory over Saint Vincent College at Ross Memorial Park.

Westminster, the tournament's No. 4 seed, improved to 18-21 with the win and will face No. 2 Grove City College at 1 p.m. Saturday (Game J). Grove City faces top-seeded Washington & Jefferson College at 6 p.m. Friday (Game I). If Grove City defeats W&J in Game I, then Game J will be a PAC Championship Tournament title game. If W&J defeats Grove City, then the winner of Game J will play W&J at 4 p.m. in Game K for the PAC title.

Albers threw 102 pitches over his career-high seven inning start, giving up one run (earned) on four hits with two walks while fanning a career-best seven batters. Junior lefty Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) worked the final 2.0 innings to earn his first save of the season. He allowed one run (earned) on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Friday was Reed's second career championship tournament save: he retired three-straight batters in the ninth inning of a 2-0 shutout of Thiel College last May.

Westminster scratched out a pair of two-out unearned runs in the first. Senior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) led the game off with a base hit and graduate second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) drew a one-out walk. Graduate first baseman Chase Tomko (Hermitage, Pa., West Middlesex) reached on a Saint Vincent throwing error, which led to both Campbell and Murgenovich crossing home plate.

Derek Hald's RBI single in the home half of the first cut Westminster's lead to 2-1.

Westminster carried its one-run lead through the next seven innings before tacking on another in the ninth.. Murgenovich singled with one out before scoring on Tomko's two-out base hit.

Saint Vincent's Ryan Tierney, pinch-running for Jacob Auld after leading off the home half of the ninth with a pinch-hit double, scored on Alex Hess' one-out groundout. After issuing an intentional walk to Dylan Schmude, Reed got Lane Golkosky swinging.

Sophomore centerfielder Quinn Marquis (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) went 2-for-4. It was his ninth multi-hit game of the season. Murgenovich reached base twice and scored a pair of runs. He has reached safely in 15-straight games. Campbell's leadoff single stretched his current hitting streak to 18 games.

Schmude went 2-for-3 with two walks, a stolen base and a run scored. Tyler Dancu, Saint Vincent's starter, took the loss, giving up three runs (1 earned) on five hits and a walk in 8.2 innings. He struck out five.
