Westminster advances to PAC title game

GROVE CITY, Pa.--Sophomore right-hander Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) continued her hot start in this year's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament Friday, firing a two-hit shutout in Westminster College's 6-0 triumph over top-seeded Grove City College.

Westminster, the championship tournament's No. 2 seed, is now 27-11. The Titans need a win in Saturday's 2 p.m. game to secure their second-straight conference title.

Grove City, now 25-12, had its five-game winning streak snapped with Friday's loss. The Wolverines will play in an elimination game at 12 p.m. Saturday, facing the winner of Game H--the day's first elimination game--between No. 3 Geneva College and No. 5 Thiel College, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. Game H was originally scheduled to be played at 5 p.m. Friday, but due to inclement weather, was moved to Saturday.

Piper threw 83 pitches in Friday's shutout, her eighth of the year, walking one and striking out four while lowering her earned-run average (ERA) to 1.49. She's now 16-4 this spring. Piper gave up a two-out single to Brooke Brodie in the home half of the first and allowed a leadoff double to Abigail Meadors in the fifth.

Freshman first baseman Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. It was her fifth three-hit game this season. Senior third baseman Mia Meholick (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic) finished 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Sophomore Leah Taliani (Arnold, Pa., Valley) drove in a run with her pinch hit single in the sixth, extending the Titans' lead to 5-0.

Meadors, Grove City's starting pitcher, fell to 12-5 with the loss, giving up three runs (3 earned) on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Brodie gave up three runs (3 earned) over two innings.
