Back-to-Back! Westminster wins PAC softball title

GROVE CITY, Pa.--Behind another terrific start by freshman right-hander Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley), the Westminster College softball program claimed a 7-0 victory over Grove City College in the title game of this year's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon.

Westminster, the tournament's No. 2 seed, improved to 28-11 with the win. The title is the third in program history. The Titans did not allow a run in this year's championship tournament, turning in an 11-0, five-inning win over No. 6 Thiel College last Thursday, a 6-0 win over top-seeded Grove City last Friday and a 7-0 title-clinching shutout Thursday over Grove City.

As the winner of this year's PAC championship tournament title, Westminster secured the league's automatic qualifying bid to the Division III Championship, with teams and regional site selections to be announced Monday, May 12. Regional round play is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, May 15-17 with the Super Regionals scheduled for Thursday and Friday, May 22-23.

Piper ran her season record in the circle to 17-4 with the victory. It was her program-best ninth shutout of the year. She threw 90 pitches in the win, including 64 for strikes. Piper's 17 wins this season are tied for fourth-most in program history (Jennifer Pancake, 17-13, 2006). She gave up four hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts. Her 161 strikeouts are third-most in program history.

Westminster got things going early offensively with a three-run first inning. Freshman first baseman Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) delivered a two-run single before freshman shortstop Morgan O'Brien's (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) sacrifice fly. Freshman leftfielder Sam Levac (Oakville, Ontario, Garth Webb) smacked a two-out, two-run single to center in the fourth before O'Brien clubbed a two-out, two-run home run to left in the seventh. It was O'Brien's fifth home run of the year.

Levac, Westminster's No. 2 hitter, went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. She also recorded her 16th stolen base of the year. Thursday was her eighth multi-hit game of the season. Sophomore designated player Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) went 2-for-4.

Following Thursday's win, Piper was named the championship tournament's Most Outstanding Player. She was joined on the league's all-tournament team by Jordan, senior third baseman Mia Meholick (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic) and sophomore catcher Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington).
