Game Recap: Baseball |

Westminster falls in PAC title game

NORTH FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, Pa.--Westminster College used a great start by senior righty Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln), some impressive defense and timely two-out hitting to earn a 5-2 victory in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Baseball Championship Tournament over Grove City College Saturday at Ross Memorial Park, forcing an if-necessary game for the first time since 2018. The Titans suffered an 8-1 setback in the winner-take-all game.

Saturday was Westminster's fifth all-time appearance in the league's title series. The Titans won PAC titles in 2005 and 2012 and advanced to the championship series in 2011 and 2022.

Gibbons,  junior right fielder Andrew Wolf (Dillsburg, Pa., Northern York) and sophomore center fielder Quinn Marquis (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) were named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of Saturday's title game.

Westminster, the tournament's No. 4 seed, wraps up its season with a 19-22 overall record. Grove City, the No. 2 seed, improved to 31-11. Its 31 victories are a new program high-water mark.

Game J -- (4) Westminster 4, (2) Grove City 2
Gibbons won his second game of this year's championship tournament in the Game J victory. He threw 72 pitches and gave up two runs (2 earned) on five hits with a walk while striking out five. In Thursday's 5-4 win over top-seeded Washington & Jefferson College, Gibbons earned the win in relief of sophomore right-hander Tyson Djakovich (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory), firing 4.0 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk while fanning three during the 52-pitch outing. Saturday's victory was Gibbons' fourth career win in the PAC Championship Tournament.

Westminster struck for a pair of runs in the home half of the second. Marquis smacked a ground-rule double to center to lead off the inning before junior designated hitter Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) drew a walk. After sophomore catcher Braden Zeigler's (New Castle, Pa., Shenango) bunt base hit, Wolf drilled a two-run single to center field. Westminster tacked on its third run in the third. Reed, following his two-out base hit, advanced to third on a Ziegler single before scoring a wild pitch.

Grove City got on the board in the fifth. Kallen Durbin led off the inning with a triple and scored on Sam Bevin's two-out base hit. Bevin scored on a Gibbons' wild pitch later in the inning.

Westminster scratched out its fourth run in the fifth inning. Graduate first baseman Chase Tomko (Hermitage, Pa., West Middlesex) and Marquis reached on one-out, back-to-back base hits before advancing on a Reed groundout. With two outs, Ziegler reached base on a Grove City fielding error, allowing Tomko to score. The Titans' fifth run of the game came with two outs in the seventh. Ziegler led off the inning with a base hit, moved to second on a Wolf groundout and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on sophomore third baseman Parker Lyons' (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) two-out fielder's choice.

Graduate right-hander Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin) secured the rare four-inning save, his third of the year. He allowed three hits and a walk while striking out three.

Ziegler went 3-for-4, the first three-hit game of his career. Marquis reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. He was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the sixth.

Game K -- (2) Grove City 8, (4) Westminster 1
Grove City scored four runs in the home half of the first in support of right-hander Sam Bevin, who helped his own cause in the second with a one-out, two-run home run to right field that pushed the Wolverines' lead to 6-0. The start was Bevin's first since working 6.0 innings in a 9-4 game two win at Geneva College on March 29.

Westminster got on the board in the fifth. Tomko led off the frame with a base hit, moved to second on Marquis' fielder's choice and went to third on a Grove City throwing error. He scored on a Zeigler groundout.

Grove City added two unearned runs in the seventh.

Junior right-hander Tyler Staub (Edinburg, Pa., Union) took the loss, giving up four runs (4 earned) on two hits with two walks and a strikeout in 1.0 inning. Senior righty Dwight Parker (Youngstown, Ohio, Liberty) worked 5.0 innings of relief, firing four scoreless innings after allowing Bevin's two-run home run in the second. He gave up two runs (2 earned) on two hits with two walks and struck out a pair.

Graduate second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) was 2-for-4. It was his 13th multi-hit game of the year.

Bevins, voted the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, went 8.0 innings in the win, allowing one run (unearned) on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts. David Gallagher was perfect in the ninth.
