Westminster secures road split against Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa.--The Westminster College softball program registered a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) split Wednesday afternoon at Grove City College, earning a 2-0 shutout victory in game one before falling 9-4 in the nightcap.

Westminster's record now stands at 18-8 overall and 7-3 in the PAC. Grove City is 19-6 overall with a 10-2 league record.

Game 1
Freshman right-hander Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) earned her 10th win of the season in the game one shutout, her fourth of the year. She allowed three hits, struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

Scoreless after six innings, freshman second baseman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) broke things open in the top of the seventh with a two-run double. Piper retired the side in the seventh, her fourth inning sitting Grove City's batters down in order.

O'Brien finished 1-for-3. Freshman first baseman Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) was 1-for-3 with a run scored while sophomore shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) also went 1-for-3.

Game 2
Westminster got out to an early 3-0 lead in game two, with Karpa's RBI single in the first, senior designated hitter Mia Meholick's (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic) sacrifice fly in the second and Jordan's RBI groundout in the third. Grove City tied it at 3-3 in the fourth before Brooke Brodie's two-run single gave the Wolverines a 5-3 lead. Jordan's two-out, run-scoring single in the top of the fifth cut Westminster's deficit to one, 5-4, before Grove City tacked on three more in the home half of the inning and added one more in the sixth.

Sophomore left-hander Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman), the game two starter, took the no-decision after giving up two runs (2 earned) on five hits with a walk and a strikeout in 3.0 innings. Piper suffered the loss, falling to 10-3 after allowing three runs (3 earned) on two hits with a walk in 1.0 inning.

Karpa went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Her first inning single extended her hitting streak to 19 games. Joardan went 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs. It was her eighth multi-RBI this year.
