Westminster takes two against W&J

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College softball program secured a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep of visiting Washington & Jefferson College Saturday afternoon, earning a 3-0 shutout victory in game one before rolling to a 7-1 win in the nightcap. 

Seniors Sam Holden (Youngstown, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney)Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin)Mia Meholick (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic) and Danielle Teasdale (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) were honored before the first pitch.

Westminster improved to 20-8 overall and 9-3 in the league with the sweep. W&J fell to 10-13 overall and 5-7 in the PAC.

Game 1
Freshman right-hander Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) upped her season record to 11-3 with the shutout, her fifth of the year. She gave up one hit, a double to Hannah Allen leading off the fifth inning. She retired 12-straight batters to start the game. Piper struck out 11 and did not walk a batter Saturday, pushing her season strikeout total to 102. 

Sophomore shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) had a two-out, RBI single in the home half of the third before senior third baseman Mia Meholick's (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic) sacrifice fly and sophomore catcher Faith Jones' (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) RBI single in the fifth. Junior right fielder Kelly Troup (Mogadore, Ohio, Field) scored twice, walked in the third and doubled in the fifth. 

Game 2
Sophomore right-hander Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) ran her season record to 8-2, giving up one run (earned) on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts. 

Karpa smacked her fifth home run of the season in the home half of the first, following up Jones' RBI double with a two-run shot to left. Karpa is currently riding a 21-game hit streak. Freshman second baseman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) hit her fourth home run of the season, a two-out, two-run shot to center. She went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. 

Jones went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and a run scored. She has nine multi-hit games this year, including five games with three or more hits. Jones is hitting .453 this season. Meholick was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while junior third baseman Jenna Boneysteele (Carnegie, Pa., Chartiers Valley) went 2-for-3. 

Up Next:
Westminster will hit the road next week, traveling to Franciscan University on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) and Allegheny College on Thursday (3:30 p.m.).
