Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Westminster snags pivotal PAC victory over Thiel

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Behind a five-goal, three-assist effort from junior attacker Julia Ravazza (Twain Harte, Calif., Dublin), the Westminster College women's lacrosse program secured a pivotal 13-9 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Thiel College Saturday afternoon at the UPMC Sports Complex.

Westminster upped its record to 9-2 overall and improved to 4-1 in the league with the win. The Titans suffered a 14-8 loss to the Tomcats in Greenville last April. Thiel fell to 8-2 overall and 2-2 in the PAC with the setback.

Saturday was Westminster's annual Morgan's Message Game, dedicated to the life and legacy of Morgan Rodgers, a former Duke University Lacrosse student-athlete who died tragically in July 2019 after battling mental health struggles. Although Morgan's life was cut way too short, her legacy of unconditional love remains. Morgan's Message was created by her family and former teammates with the mission to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health, normalize the conversations about mental health and ensure that mental health is treated equally to physical health for all student-athletes.

Saturday was Ravazza's fifth game this year with eight or more points. She has five or more goals in three games this season. Ravazza added seven draw controls and three ground balls. Senior midfielder Felicia Young (Darlington, Pa., Blackhawk) scored three goals while freshman midfielder Allyssa Anstis (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) added two goals and an assist. Junior attackers Chloe Courinos (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) and Haley Wenzel (Coppell, Texas, Coppell) each had one goal, one assist and two ground balls. Freshman midfielder Ava Kessler (White Oak, Pa., Norwin) finished with a goal, two ground balls, a caused turnover and six draw controls. Her free position goal came with under 10 minutes left in the first half, extending Westminster's lead to five, 8-3. It was her first free position score since going 2-for-2 in Westminster's 20-3 win at Greensboro College on March 13.

Junior defender Isabella Cespedes (Merrick, N.Y., Sanford H. Calhoun) totaled five ground balls and two caused turnovers while classmate Morgan Reidy (Elmira, N.Y., Elmira) chipped in with three ground balls and a caused turnover. Sophomore Falyn Snyder (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) finished with a career-high 14 saves and added three ground balls.

Ashlyn Wightman led Thiel with five goals and two assists. She added three ground balls and six draw controls. Madison Liggett made 13 saves and had four ground balls.

Westminster scored five goals in the first period and added five more in the second to take a 10-3 lead into halftime. A woman-up goal by Hayden Wightman, followed by two-straight goals from Skylar Garlick, cut Westminster's lead to four, 10-6, with under seven minutes to go in the third quarter.

Ashlyn Wightman scored the final goal of the third and the first of the fourth to trim the deficit to just three, 11-8, with under 12 to go. Anstis' woman-up goal with under 11 to go, followed by Ravazza's final goal of the game with just over four minutes left, pushed Westminster's lead back to five, 13-8. Ashlyn Wightman scored the game's final goal with just under three-and-half-minutes remaining.
