Westminster falls in PAC semifinal round

GROVE CITY, Pa.--Westminster College suffered a 26-7 loss to Grove City College in the semifinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament Wednesday night at Robert E. Thorn Field.

Grove City, the tournament's top seed, improved to 12-7 and will host Chatham University in the title game Saturday. No. 2 Chatham outscored No. 3 Saint Vincent College 3-0 in the fourth quarter to earn a 10-7 semifinal victory in the tournament's second semifinal. The Chatham-Saint Vincent semifinal, originally scheduled to be played at Chatham, was moved to Latrobe, Pa. due to power outages stemming from the severe weather in the Pittsburgh area on Tuesday.

Westminster, the No. 4 seed, fell to 10-8. It was the program's sixth-straight year earning a berth in the league's four-team championship tournament.

Grove City erupted for 11 first quarter goals and stretched its lead to 18-0 before senior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) scored with a minute-and-a-half to go before halftime break. The Wolverines held a 46-10 first half advantage in shots, putting 29 on goal.

Westminster scored back-to-back goals to open the second half, with senior defender David Evangelista (Pittsburgh, Pa., Chartiers Valley) netting his first goal of the year 27 seconds into the third. Junior midfielder Kyler Nigliazzo (Montgomery, Texas, Magnolia West) followed 48 seconds later, scoring off an assist from freshman attacker Ethan Kurtz (Hummelstown, Pa., Lower Dauphin). The goal was Nigliazzo's 11th this season.

Kurtz scored with just over two minutes left in the third off an assist from graduate midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) before Jones opened the fourth with his second goal of the day, and 66th this season, two minutes into the quarter, cutting the deficit to 20-5. Trailing 22-5, Sentz scored his 40th goal of the year off an assist from sophomore midfielder Anthony Trella (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) with just over 10 minutes remaining. Down 25-5, Kurtz netted his second goal of the game, a man-up goal, off a Trella assist with just under four minutes left. It was his 49th goal of the year.

Stewart McClain led Grove City offensively, totaling seven goals and three assists. Zachary Houghan added three goals and six assists.
