Westminster falls in ECAC title game

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's lacrosse program was dealt a 14-6 loss by visiting Goucher College in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship title game Sunday afternoon at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

Goucher, members of the Landmark Conference, finished its season as winners of three-straight games and wrapped up its schedule with an 11-8 overall record. The No. 2 seed, Goucher earned a 19-10 win over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Wednesday night to advance to Sunday's title game. 

Westminster, the tournament's top seed, finished its season 10-9.

Goucher junior Jacob Morgan was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. He recorded 20 points on nine goals and 11 assists during the Gophers' two-game run to the ECAC title. Sunday, Morgan had one goal and six assists. 

Senior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) fired in four goals for Westminster. Junior midfielder Kyler Nigliazzo (Montgomery, Texas, Magnolia West) had one goal and one assist while graduate midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) finished with one goal. Freshman attacker Ethan Kurtz (Hummelstown, Pa., Lower Dauphin) assisted on Nigliazzo's score with seven seconds left in the opening quarter that cut Goucher's lead to two, 5-3. 

Freshman Nolan Grieshaber (Rocklin, Calif., Rocklin) made 13 saves and added one ground ball in 50 minutes. Junior Jorden Tate (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) made two saves in the final 10 minutes.

Freshman Jack Steimle (Mount Sinai, N.Y., Mount Sinai) was 5-of-10 on faceoffs and added four ground balls. Freshman Alex Rivera (Ewing, N.J., Notre Dame) won 4-of-8 faceoffs with two a pair of ground balls. Senior long-stick Brody McGuinness (Heber City, Utah, Wasatch) registered two ground balls and two caused turnovers. 

Leading 6-3 after one half, Goucher outscored Westminster 6-0 in the pivotal third quarter. Milan Temple had three of his four goals in the third. 

Jack Smith recorded 13 saves and three ground balls for the Gophers. 

Goucher outshot Westminster 48-37 with a 29-19 advanage in shots on goal. The Gophers were successful on 24 of their 25 clear attempts.
