Westminster upends Allegheny, snags No. 4 seed

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's lacrosse program clinched the No. 4 seed in next week's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament with a 10-3 victory over Allegheny College Saturday afternoon at the UPMC Sports Complex.

Westminster wrapped up its regular season with a 10-7 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the PAC. Allegheny had its four-game win streak snapped with Saturday's loss, falling to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in the league.

Westminster partnered with the College's Wellness Center to dedicate today's game to Team One Love, showing the program's commitment to promoting healthy relationships on and off the field. Founded in honor of University of Virginia student-athlete Yeardley Love, One Love is a national non-profit that provides prevention education to young people about the importance of healthy relationships, empowering them to identify and avoid abuse.

Freshman attacker Ethan Kurtz (Hummelstown, Pa., Lower Dauphin) finished with three goals, his eighth game of the season with three or more scores. Senior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) scored twice and added an assist, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore attacker Anthony Trella (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) had one goal and two assists.

Freshman long-stick Tanner Crosby (Park City, Utah, Park City) finished with five ground balls and had one caused turnover while senior long-stick Brody McGuinness (Heber City, Utah, Wasatch) had four ground balls and a caused turnover. Senior defender Geoffrey Worsey (Frederick, Md., Tuscarora) posted three ground balls and three caused turnovers while junior midfielder Asher Silberling (Redondo Beach, Calif., Redondo Union) added three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Jack Cushwa scored twice for Allegheny.

Westminster blanked Allegheny in the first quarter, leading 3-0 heading into the second. The Titans took a 5-2 lead into halftime. Westminster outscored Allegheny 4-0 in the third, thanks to a pair of Jones' goals and scores by McGuinness and freshman midfielder Paul DiPasquale (Woodbine, Md., Glenelg), and were up seven, 9-2, going into the fourth. Kurtz closed out the scoring, netting his third of the day with just over one minute remaining.

Westminster finished with 47 shots, putting 25 on net, compared to 32 shots, and 15 shots on goal, for Allegheny. The Titans were 23-of-32 on clears and 1-of-5 on man-up opportunities.
