Westminster takes a pair against Thiel

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College softball program snagged a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep against rival Thiel College Wednesday, winning the opener 4-3 in 16 innings before rallying to earn a 4-1 game two victory.

Westminster improved to 24-10 overall and 13-5 in the PAC. Thiel fell to 14-16 overall and 8-10 in league play.

Game 1
With the International Tiebreaker rule in place starting in the 10th inning, and Thiel leading 1-0 on Jensen Stehlik's RBI single, freshman second baseman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) tied the game at 1-all with a run-scoring double in the home half of the inning. O'Brien's double was her sixth this season. Thiel added two runs in the top of the 13th on Abby Rotmann's one-out, two-run single, but sophomore catcher Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) matched her with a two-out, two run single to right to tie the game again.

After scoreless 14th and 15th innings, freshman right-hander Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) retired the top of the 16th in order to give Westminster a chance in the bottom half of the frame. Junior right-fielder Kelly Troup (Mogadore, Ohio, Field), placed on second to start the 16th, advanced to third base on senior designated player Mia Meholick's (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic) base hit before scoring on Jones' game-winning sacrifice fly.

Piper ran her record to 13-4, giving up one run (earned) on six hits with five walks and career-high 15 strikeouts in the complete-game win. Westminster had just five hits in the extra-innings win. Jones finished 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and three RBIs.

Becca Landis took the loss for Thiel (9-7), allowing four runs (0 earned) on five hits with five walks and 11 strikeouts.

Game 2
Thiel jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first before Troup's RBI groundout in the third tied the game. Junior third baseman Jenna Boneysteele's (Carnegie, Pa., Chartiers Valley) sacrifice fly, followed by a two-out, two-run double from freshman leftfielder Sam Levac (Oakville, Ontario, Garth Webb) stretched the Titans' lead to three.

The game was called after four-and-a-half innings, with Westminster leading, due to darkness.

Sophomore right-hander Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) improved to 9-3 with the five-inning win, giving up one run (earned) on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Freshman first baseman Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) went 2-for-2 with a run scored while Levac finished 2-for-2 with a double, a stolen base, two RBIs and a run scored.
