Westminster closes regular season with split at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa.--The Westminster College softball program worked a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) split at Waynesburg University Saturday afternoon at the Baseball & Softball Complex to close out the regular season. Westminster earned a 3-0 game one victory before falling 2-0 in the nightcap. 

Westminster is now 25-11 overall wrapped up its league ledger with a 14-6 mark, good for the No. 2 seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament. Waynesburg is 23-15 overall and 9-10 in the PAC, with its halted game from April 9 scheduled to be completed on Monday afternoon. Waynesburg, Saint Vincent College Thiel College all remain in contention for the sixth and final seed in the conference's championship tournament.

Game 1
Freshman right-hander Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) ran her season record to 14-4 with the game one one-hitter. It was her sixth shutout of the year. She struck out 13 in the win, walking two and hitting Meysa Heitmann, Waynesburg's leadoff hitter, in the home half of the first. Piper has fanned a dozen or more batters in four games this season.

In the top half of the fourth, sophomore designated player Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) delivered an RBI single into center before senior centerfielder Sydney Lokay's (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) run-scoring base hit. Freshman first baseman Lily Jordan's (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) sacrifice fly in the fifth scored sophomore catcher Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington), who led off the inning with her eighth double of the year. 

Jones went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored while Davis finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. 

Game 2
Waynesburg's Sydney Wilson gave up three hits and a pair of walks while striking out four in her complete-game win in the nightcap. Freshman leftfielder (Oakville, Ontario, Garth Webb) was 1-for-2 with a walk and stolen base, her 14th of the year. Sophomore second baseman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) went 1-for-2 with a walk while Jones went 1-for-3. 

Davis fell to 9-4 in the circle with the game two loss, allowing one run (earned) on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Piper worked the final two innings, giving up a fifth-inning, two-out home run to Grace Higgins. Higgins finished 2-for-3 with a a home run, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. 

Up Next:
Westminster has punched its ticket to next week's PAC Championship Tournament, with is scheduled to get underway Thursday. Grove City College has earned the league's top seed and secured hosting rights for the entirety of the championship tournament.
