Westminster splits with Thiel

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball program split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Thiel College Wednesday afternoon, dropping game one 2-1 before snagging a 9-4 win the nightcap. 

Westminster's record now stands at 15-17 overall and 10-8 in the PAC. Thiel is now 13-20 and 9-7 in the league. 

Game 1
Thiel's Chase Morrison's one out double down the right field line scored Colton Brightwell and Ethan Bintrim to give Thiel a 2-0 advantage in top half of the third. In the home half of the inning, junior designated hitter Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) tripled to left, sophomore third baseman Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) delivered a two-out single to center that scored Reed. 

Senior right-hander Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) fell to 1-4 this season with the complete-game loss, allowing two runs (2 earned) on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout. 

Reed went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. It was his second triple this season. 

Game 2
Westminster combined for 15 hits in its game two win. Senior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Reed went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. It was Reed's first three-hit game this season. Graduate second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) went 2-for-5 with an RBI from his leadoff position. Lyons went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, an RBI and three runs scored while sophomore centerfielder Quinn Marquis (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

Sophomore right-hander Jon Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) picked up his first victory of the season (1-3), going 5.1 innings and allowing three runs (3 earned) on five hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts. Graduate right-hander Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin) worked a three-inning save, giving up one run (earned) on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings. It was his second three-inning save of the season. 

Up Next:
Westminster will travel to Meadville Saturday to face Allegheny College. The first pitch of the PAC doubleheader from Robert M. Garbark '32 Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
