Westminster manages PAC split at Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball program forged a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader split at Geneva College Friday, dropping game one 8-7 before bouncing back with a 7-2 game two triumph.

Westminster's record now stands at 14-16 overall and 9-7 in the PAC. Geneva is 14-14 overall and 4-12 in the league.

Game 1
Westminster grabbed a 4-1 run lead with its three-run third. Senior second baseman Logan Murgenovich's (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) drew a leadoff walk and senior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) followed with a base hit. Murgenovich scored on a Geneva throwing error and freshman first baseman Jack Strausser's (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) sacrifice fly drove in Campbell. Sophomore centerfielder Quinn Marquis' (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) RBI single scored sophomore third baseman Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester), who reached on the error.

Tied 7-7 after seven, Geneva's Simon Weir laced a two-out, walkoff RBI double to left.

Senior right-hander Wyatt Walker (Venetia, Pa., Peters Township) took the loss, giving up one run (unearned) on two hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Graduate right-hander Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin) allowed five runs (2 earned) on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts over 6.0 innings in the no-decision. Senior right-hander Dwight Parker (Youngstown, Ohio, Liberty) gave up two runs (2 earned) on two hits and a walk in seventh.

Murgenovich went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. It was his second three-hit game this season.

Game 2
Trailing 1-0 after one, Westminster scored seven unanswered runs, plating two in the second, two in the sixth and two in the eighth. Strausser drilled a two-run home run in the sixth and senior centerfielder Derek Beach (Titusville, Pa., Titusville) followed with a two-run shot in the eighth, his second of the year. It was Strausser's first collegiate home run.

Sophomore right-hander Tyson Djakovich (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory) ran his record to 6-0 this season with the win, giving up two runs (2 earned) on eight hits with a walk and eight strikeouts in a career-best 8.0 innings. He has struck out eight batters three times this spring. Senior right-hander Ryan Feth (Jefferson Hills, Pa., Thomas Jefferson) stuck out one in a scoreless ninth.

Strausser went 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored. It was his first career three-hit game. Murgenovich went 2-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored.
