Westminster falls twice at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa.--The Westminster College softball program dropped a pair one-run decisions at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Allegheny College Thursday, falling 5-4 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap. 

Allegheny improved to 19-13 overall and 12-6 in conference matchups. Westminster fell to 22-10 overall and 11-5 in the league. 

Game 1
Westminster, nursing a one-run lead throughout the entirety of the opener, carried a 4-3 lead into home half of the seventh before Olivia Devries ended it with a two-out, two-run walkoff home run. It was her seventh home run this spring. Freshman right-hander Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) took the loss, falling to 12-4 in the circle. She allowed five runs (5 earned) on nine hits with a walk and nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings. It was her fifth game with nine or more strikeouts this season. 

Sophomore catcher Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored. It was her 10th multi-hit game this season and sixth game with three hits. Freshman second baseman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. 

Aleya Belardinelli improved to 8-6 with the complete-game win, giving up four runs (3 earned) on eight hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Devries finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, a home run, four RBIs and a pair of runs scored. 

Game 2
Allegheny's three-run fourth inning keyed its game two victory. Sofia Genareo opened the scoring with a two-out, two-run home run before Alaina Sharp followed with an RBI double. Jones' two-out, run-scoring double in the fifth cut the lead to two, 3-1, before sophomore shortstop Ava Karpa's (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) RBI groundout in the top half of the seventh trimmed the lead to one, 3-2. 

Sophomore right-hander Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) fell to 8-3 this season with the loss, giving up three runs (3 earned) on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Sophomore right-hander Riley Salazar (Elizabeth, Pa., Elizabeth Forward) allowed two hits and struck out one in 2.0 innings of relief work. Senior third baseman Mia Meholick (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic) went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Jones was 2-for-3 with an RBI. She is hitting .460 this season. 

Samantha Dzierba improved to 8-5 in the circle with the complete-game win, allowing two runs (1 earned) on 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Westminster will host Thiel College next Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
