Westminster takes two at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio--The Westminster College softball team registered a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) five-inning, run-rule victories Wednesday at Franciscan University, taking game one 12-0 and game two 11-2. 

Westminster upped its overall record to 22-8 overall and 11-3 in the PAC. Franciscan has dropped 11-straight games, falling to 4-20 overall and 1-13 in the league. 

Game 1
Westminster pounded out 16 hits, including five extra-base hits, in the opener. Senior third baseman Mia Meholick (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic) led off the game with a home run, her second of the year. Sophomore shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) and freshman first baseman Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) hit back-to-back home runs to start the second. Karpa has six home runs this season, while Jordan has hit five. Freshman left fielder Sam Levac (Oakville, Ontario, Garth Webb) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman third baseman Sofia Ortiz (Erie, Pa., Fairview) had RBI singles in the second and the fourth innings, respectively. 

Freshman right-hander Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) improved to 12-3 in the circle, allowing two hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 3.0 innings. Sophomore right-hander Riley Salazar (Elizabeth, Pa., Elizabeth Forward) struck out three in the final two innings. 

Game 2
Meholick went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, a stolen base and three runs scored in the nightcap. She has 11 multi-hit games this year. Levac was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs while freshman second baseman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Karpa's two-out, RBI single in the second extended her hitting streak to 23 games. 

Junior right-hander Jenna Boneysteele (Carnegie, Pa., Chartiers Valley) picked up her first win with Westminster after giving up two runs (2 earned) on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts in the complete game. 

Up Next:
Westminster will travel to Meadville Thursday to take on Allegheny College. First pitch from the Robertson Softball Field is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
