Murgenovich becomes all-time leader in hits, runs, doubles

CARY, N.C.--Westminster College suffered a pair of setbacks Sunday afternoon to William Peace University, falling 4-3 in the opener and 8-5 in the nightcap at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. Graduate second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) became the program's all-time leader in hits, runs and doubles after totaling three hits, including two for extra bases, and a pair of runs scored.

WPU is 4-11 this season while Westminster's record stands at 4-4.

Up Next:
Westminster is back in action Tuesday at Methodist College (10-5). First pitch from Armstrong-Shelley Field in Fayetteville, N.C. is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Game 1: William Peace 4, Westminster 3
Despite another terrific start by graduate right-hander Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin), Westminster was unable to hold on to its one-run lead through seven. Banfi, in the no-decision, went 7.0 strong innings, allowing one run (earned) on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Scoreless through four, Westminster scratched out a pair of runs in the fifth on senior shortstop Braeden Campbell's (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) RBI fielder's choice and sophomore centerfielder Quinn Marquis' (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) RBI groundout. Up 2-1 going into the eighth, junior first baseman Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) followed up Murgenovich's one-out double with a run-scoring single. The double, Murgenovich's 40th of his career, established a new program record, eclipsing John Izzo's (2006-09) previous record of 39.

In the eighth, Alex Levesque cut the lead to one, 3-2, with an RBI base hit before Nick Tubolino's two-out, two-run single put the Pacers on top for good.

Freshman right-hander Nicholas Parrotto (Mars, Pa., Seneca Valley) took the loss, allowing three runs (2 earned) on three hits with two walks in two-thirds of an inning. Junior right-hander Tyler Parsons (Hebron, Ky., Conner) struck out Aaron Kimbrel to close out the eighth.

Senior designated hitter David Kelly (Gibsonia, Pa., Eden Christian Academy) went 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Sophomore third baseman Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Jarrett Hall went 8.0 innings to secure the win, allowing three runs (2 earned) on seven hits with a walk. Maxwell Kasprowicz earned the save, giving up two hits while striking out two in the ninth.

Game 2: William Peace 8, Westminster 5
Westminster pitchers were tagged for eight runs on a season-high 17 hits in the game two loss. The Titans managed to cut the Pacers' lead to one five different times before a two-run eighth, when Gavin Turner's RBI single, followed up by Ian Turner's run-scoring double, stretched the lead to three. Landon Coleman got a groundout and a pair of flyouts in the top of the ninth to preserve the Pacers' win.

Murgenovich finished 2-for-5 at the plate and is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak. Scoring on Reed's fielder's choice in the third, the run trimmed WPU's lead to one, 4-3, and surpassed Izzo's all-time record of 121. His triple to lead off the seventh was the 186th hit of his career, bypassing Izzo's previous program record of 185.

Lyons finished 2-for-5 while senior left fielder Derek Beach (Titusville, Pa., Titusville) doubled in the fifth. It was his fifth extra-base hit this season. Kelly singled to lead off the fourth and has now hit safely in six of seven games played.

Senior left-hander Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) took the loss, giving up four runs (4 earned) on 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts in 4.0 innings.

Ian Turner went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs for WPU.
