Baseball falls at Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.--The Westminster College baseball program suffered a 10-2 loss to Methodist College Tuesday afternoon at Armstrong-Shelley Field.

Methodist, winners of four its last five, improved to 11-5 with victory. Westminster has now dropped three straight, falling to 4-5 overall. 

Westminster managed five hits Tuesday. Graduate second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) went 1-for-2, hammering a two-out double to right in the first. He is riding an eight-game hitting streak.

Scoreless through three-and-a-half, Methodist plated three runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to grab an 8-0 lead. The Monarchs added another in the sixth on a wild pitch to go up 9-0. Freshman left fielder Aaron Jones (Buffalo, N.Y., Canisius) drew a one-out, bases loaded walk in the eighth before Methodist added another score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning. 

Freshman pinch hitter Keagan Book (Butler, Pa., Moniteau) led off the ninth with a base hit before freshman shortstop Thomas Rook (Clarence Center, N.Y., Clarence) followed with a single of his own. Book and Rook advanced on a passed ball before freshman first baseman Jack Strausser (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) scored Book with an RBI groundout. 

Junior right-hander Tyler Staub (Edinburg, Pa., Union) took the loss, giving up six runs (6 earned) on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Sophomore shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) had a one-out single in the third, pushing his streak of reaching base safely to seven games.

Westminster will travel to Guilford College Wednesday. Opening pitch from Edgar H. McBane Field in Greensboro, N.C. is set for 2 p.m.
