Kurtz's late goal lifts Westminster to win at Capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio--Freshman Ethan Kurtz (Hummelstown, Pa., Lower Dauphin) registered the game-winning goal in the closing moments of regulation to lift Westminster College to an 11-10 road triumph over Capital University at Bernlohr Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Kurtz laced his most decisive score this season off graduate student Jimmy Sentz's (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) assist with just 41 seconds remaining.

Westminster, winners of three straight, improved to 4-1. Capital fell to 2-3. It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Senior Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) stayed hot Saturday, finishing with six points on five goals and an assist. He currently leads the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) in points, with 33, and goals, with 24, this season. Jones, who became the program's all-time leading scorer last Saturday with eight goals and an assist in a win over Hiram College, surpassed 200 career points against Capital. Through 55 career games, he has 203 points on 149 goals and 54 assists.

Kurtz finished with three goals--his third game of the season with three or more goals--while senior Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) added three assists. Sentz had one goal and one assist.

Junior Asher Silberling (Redondo Beach, Calif., Redondo Union) finished with a career-high five ground balls, two caused turnovers and scored his first goal since a win at Chatham University last March. Junior Jahiem Hawkins (Huntington Station, N.Y., Huntington) had four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Senior long-stick midfielder Brody McGuinness (Heber City, Utah, Wasatch) finished with four ground balls. Freshman Nolan Grieshaber (Rocklin, Calif., Rocklin) made 10 saves, marking his third game with double-digit saves this year.

Charlie Howenstine led Capital with seven points on three goals and four assists. Gino Nave finished with seven ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Titans led 5-4 at the half. Jones had four first half goals while Kurtz added a score. Grieshaber had five first half saves.

Westminster managed to crack things open in the third, outscoring the Comets 5-3 to build a three-goal buffer going into the fourth quarter. Five different players had goals in the third: Sentz, junior Marshal Maguire (Arlington, Va., Wakefield), Jones, Kurtz and Silberling. The goal was Maguire's first this season. Landon Weihl and Howenstine scored a pair of early fourth quarter goals to get the Comets to within one, and Ty Chase's score with just over three minutes left tied the game at 10-all. Kurtz netted the game-winner with under a minute to play.
