Piper wins seventh straight, Westminster splits with New Kensington

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Freshman Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) won her seventh-straight start Monday evening, helping the Westminster College softball program salvage a non-conference split with Penn State New Kensington. The Lions earned a 7-3 win in the opener before the Titans cruised to a 15-0, five-inning run-rule victory in the nightcap. Piper gave up four hits and a walk while striking out five in game two.

Westminster moved its record to 14-6 with the split. Penn State New Kensington is now 5-9. 

Game 1
Sophomore shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) drilled her fourth home run of the season in the third, a two-out, two-run shot, to give Westminster a 3-2 lead. The Lions responded with four runs in the top half of the fourth, keyed by a two-out, two-run single by Angelina Ferriola. Up 6-3, Penn State New Kensington scratched out an unearned run in the fifth. 

Sophomore right-hander Grace Kissick (Portersville, Pa., Laurel) fell to 1-2 in the circle with the loss in the opener. She allowed six runs (6 earned) on four this with two walks and five strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Sophomore left-hander Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) threw 3.0 relief innings, giving up one run (unearned) on three hits with a strikeout. 

Sophomore catcher Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) had her third three-hit game of the year, going 3-for-4 with a run. 

Game 2
Westminster scored 14 runs in the home half of the second, sending 18 batters to the plate in the frame that consisted of 12 hits (4 extra-base hits) an error and a walk. 

Jones upped her batting average this season to .449 with a two-run triple in the second. She added a sacrifice fly later in the inning. Jones has reached base safely in 13-straight games. Senior third baseman Mia Meholick (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic) went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. It was her seventh multi-hit game this season. Freshman designated player Sofia Ortiz (Erie, Pa., Fairview) went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. She also scored on senior center fielder Sydney Lokay's (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) second inning double. Lokay finished 2-for-2 with a double, stolen base and two runs scored. Karpa was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a stolen base and run scored, extending her hitting streak to 13 games. Freshman second baseman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) delivered a three-run home run in the third, her third of the year.

Piper's 61 strikeouts rank fourth in the PAC this season. Her earned-run average (ERA) has dropped to 2.13 after not giving up an earned run over her last three starts.
