Westminster scores pair of run-rule wins over Saint Vincent

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College softball program improved to 5-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Tuesday with a sweep of Saint Vincent College, winning game one 8-0 in six innings and game two 14-2 in five.

Westminster, winners of six of its last seven, ran its overall record to 16-6. Saint Vincent fell to 13-11 overall and 1-5 in the league.

Game 1
Freshman right-hander Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) improved to 8-1 this season with the complete-game shutout, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out a career high 13 in 6.0 innings. Fresh of the first PAC Pitcher of the Week citation of her career, Piper fanned the first six batters of the game. She has double-digit strikeouts (11, 12, 13) in three game games this year.

Leading 4-0 after five full innings, Westminster's offense surged for four runs in the eighth to secure the run-rule win. Freshman second baseman Morgan O'Brien's (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) RBI base hit scored sophomore pinch runner Cheyenne Burgos (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park) for the game-winning score. O'Brien finished 2-for-4.

Freshman first baseman Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs while sophomore catcher Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Senior center fielder Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) went 2-for-3.

Game 2
Saint Vincent jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first but Westminster's sixth-run second, three-run third and four-run fourth stopped the game after four-and-a-half innings. Jones smacked a two-run single before Karpa and Jordan delivered back-to-back RBI doubles in the six-run second. Sophomore left-hander Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) helped her own cause with a two-out, run-scoring double in the inning.

Davis moved her record to 7-2 with the five-inning victory, giving up two runs (2 earned) on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts. She went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs.

Karpa was 2-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and a run scored. Jones was 1-for-3 with a walk, three RBIs and a run scored. Freshman left fielder Sam Levac (Oakville, Ontario, Garth Webb) tripled to lead off the third inning. It was the first of her career. Levac drew a walk and also scored three runs.
