Westminster thumps Bradford twice in sweep

BRADFORD, Pa.--The Westminster College softball program rolled to a pair of six-inning, run-rule decisions to secure a doubleheader sweep at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Saturday, winning 9-1 in the opener and using a seven-run top half of the sixth to earn a 12-0 victory in the nightcap.

Westminster, winners of six of its last seven, improved to 13-5 this season. Pitt-Bradford fell to 4-14.

Game 1
Westminster jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first and never looked back. Freshman first baseman Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) stretched the lead to eight in the sixth inning with her third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left.

Freshman second baseman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) was terrific at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two home runs, four RBIs and two runs scored. She hit a three-run homer in the first and added a solo home run in the third inning. Freshman leftfielder Sam Levac (Oakville, Ontario, Garth Webb) went 2-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and a pair of stolen bases. Senior third baseman Mia Meholick (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic) and sophomore catcher Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) both had a pair of hits out of the top two spots in the order.

Freshman right-hander Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) won her sixth-straight start, allowing one hit and striking out three in 3.0 innings. Sophomore right-hander Grace Kissick (Portersville, Pa., Laurel) picked up the three-inning save, giving up one run (earned) on three hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Game 2
Maintaining a 5-0 lead after four innings, the first seven batters reached safely for Westminster in its seven-run sixth. Freshman third baseman Sofia Ortiz (Erie, Pa., Fairview) smacked a two-run double to stretch the lead to 7-0 before sophomore shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) delivered a two-out, two-run double to left center that pushed the Titans' lead to 12-0.

Sophomore left-hander Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) improved to 6-2 in the circle with the win, allow three hits with a strikeout in 4.0 innings of work. Senior right-hander Jenna Boneysteele (Carnegie, Pa., Chartiers Valley) gave up one hit, walked three and struck out a pair in 2.0 innings.

Karpa went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. She is riding an 11-game hitting streak. Jones doubled in the fourth and walked in the sixth, pushing her streak of reaching base safely to 11 games. Davis finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk.
