Westminster splits twinbill at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball program split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Grove City College's R. Jack Behringer Field Wednesday, holding on for an 11-9 game one victory before falling 12-4 in the nightcap.

Westminster's overall record sits at 8-10 overall and 3-1 in the league. Grove City is now 12-7 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Game 1
Sophomore right-hander Tyson Djakovich (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory) won his fourth-straight start this spring, giving up four runs (3 earned) on six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings. It was his second-straight start with eight strikeouts.

Westminster scored four runs in the pivotal eighth to stretch its lead to six, 11-5. Graduate second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) singled to left and scored graduate catcher Chase Tomko (Hermitage, Pa., West Middlesex), who led off the frame with a double. Senior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) delivered a two-run single to right center, scoring sophomore third baseman Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester), who reached on a single, and Murgenovich. Senior designated hitter David Kelly (Gibsonia, Pa., Eden Christian Academy) followed with a single to left that plated Lyons.

Colin Marinpetro hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth for Grove City.

Senior right-hander Wyatt Walker (Venetia, Pa., Peters Township) walked two and struck out a pair in the bottom of the ninth.

Lyons was 3-for-5 with an RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored. It was his second three-hit game, and seventh multi-hit game, this season. Murgenovich went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored while Campbell finished 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Senior centerfielder Derek Beach (Titusville, Pa., Titusville) hit a two-out, two-run home run in the fourth. It was the first of his career.

Dash Lanzilotta fell to 1-3 on the mound for Grove City after allowing seven runs (2 earned) on eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Marinpetro went 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk, four RBIs and two runs scored.

Game 2
Five-straight batters reached safely for the Wolverines to start the second and the home team broke a 1-1 deadlock to go up 5-1 with their four-run frame. Up 5-3 after five-and-a-half innings, Grove City's offense exploded for six runs in the sixth, highlighted by Dan Luko's three-run home run.

Junior right-hander Tyler Staub (Edinburg, Pa., Union) fell to 0-2, giving up five runs (4 earned) on three hits and five walks in 2.0 innings. Senior right-hander Dwight Parker (Youngstown, Ohio, Liberty) worked 3.0 scoreless innings in relief of Staub, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out a pair.
